Cuban Official Reaffirms Excellent Relations With China

BEIJING.—First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel reaffirmed Cuba’s excellent relations with China here, yesterday September 2.

Díaz-Canel is leading the Cuban delegation to festivities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Chinese people’s victory over fascism in WWII.

After visiting a museum devoted to the Chinese people’s resistance struggle against the Japanese Empire, Díaz-Canel was received by Vice President Li Yuanchao.

Speaking with Prensa Latina, he commented that ties between the two countries are historic and have continued to develop throughout the different stages of their respective revolutions, recalling that Cuba was the first Latin American country to recognize the People’s Republic, 55 years ago.

These last several years, he noted, relations have been expanded as evidenced by President Xi Jinping’s visit to Cuba last year. The intergovernmental commission established has identified a number of high-impact joint projects to be undertaken over the coming period, 2016- 2020.

China, he recalled, has become Cuba’s second most important import-export partner over the last ten years, adding that Chinese investment in Cuba is been significant.

Díaz-Canel also met Prime Minister Li Keqiang, who reaffirmed his country’s desire to maintain regular high-level exchanges and reinforce communication and coordination in international affairs, as well as move forward with strategic cooperation, according to Xinhua.

Early today September 3, Díaz-Canel participated in the military parade commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Chinese people’s victory over fascism in WWII, with President Xi Jinping presiding.
