A BIT OF AFRICAN HISTORY MADE IN CANADA: BIKO-RODNEY-MALCOLM COALITION (BRMC)
FACT SHEET
The –Biko-Rodney-Malcolm Coalition (BRMC) is a broad coalition of organizations and individuals in Toronto, united specifically to build the cultural boycott of South Africa.
The BRMC’s membership takes its name from Steve Biko who was assassinated by the forces of reaction in South Africa on September 12, 1977, Walter Rodney who was murdered in Guyana on June 13, 1980 and El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X) who was shot down in broad daylight in Harlem on February 21, 1965.
Since initiating our campaign, we have given awards to artists from five countries.
Five recipients of the BRMC Award, Gil Scott-Heron, and Linton Kwesi Johnson, Bobby Womack, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick performed on the Sun City album. Dan Hill, Ann Mortifee, Four the Moment, Phyllis Hyman, Third World, The Mighty Sparrow, Eddie Grant UB40, Steel Pulse, Holly Near, Sweet in the Rock, Randy Weston, Roy Ayers, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, Gladys Knight and the Pips and others have been honored by the BRMC.
