A published report says attorneys received $1.8 million of a $5 million settlement they negotiated with the city of Chicago on behalf of the family of a black teenager shot to death by a white police officer.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports ( http://bit.ly/1US8JPX ) that's higher than the 33 percent typically earned by lawyers in such cases.

Lawyers Jeffrey Neslund and Michael Robbins first demanded $16 million from the city — $1 million for each shot fired by officer Jason Van Dyke into 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2014 shooting, which was captured on video.

The settlement, approved by a judge, gives McDonald's mother and sister shares in monthly payments. Robbins has defended his legal fees saying the amount "isn't necessarily higher than usual."
