Nigerian Army Says Shiite Leader, Wife Alive in Custody
TVC NEWS [ABUJA] - The Nigerian army says leader of the Shiite group, El-Zakzaky and his wife are alive and are in their custody as opposed to speculations that they have been killed.
Narrating the circumstances that led to the weekend skirmish between the army and the movement, General Oyebade says it was a premeditated attempt to send the nation’s army chief to an early grave.
At a news conference in Kaduna, northern Nigeria's capital, the army authorities said they were in line with the rules of engagement forced to use lethal force to protect their superior.
Police authorities on the other hand added that the day’s procession just like every other by the group was without a permit.
While the army authorities were not categorical on a casualty figure, they say military personnel were also victims of the weekend clash.
The sect in a statement say they have lost more than one thousand members to the army.
The army has however implored members of the movement to maintain the peace, assuring that their leader would make public pronouncements in due season.
