Al-Jaafari: Necessity for Good Preparation for Indirect Dialogue in Geneva to Avoid Problems That Occurred in the First Round
13 March، 2016

Geneva, SANA-Head of the Syrian Arab Republic’s delegation to the Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Geneva Bashar al-Jaafari said on Sunday that the delegation held a good meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan di Mistura, adding “We affirmed the necessity for a good preparation to the indirect dialogue in order to avoid the gaps and problems that occurred in the first round.”

Al-Jaafari, in a press statement, said that during the meeting, we affirmed the need for “the mediator to take into consideration the fairness, objectivity and neutrality as well as taking a constructive role to build confidence and create credibility among the delegations.”

“Until now, we don’t know which delegations we are supposed to negotiate with through the UN envoy,” al-Jaafari said.

On the red lines put by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem during a press conference on Saturday in Damascus, al-Jaafari said “We repeated al-Moallem’s speech and we noticed an understanding by Di Mistura of the notability of the Syrian official stance and the context of al-Moallem’s speech on this issue.”

On the latest statements of the opposition delegations, particularly “the transitional government” and “the role of President Bashar al-Assad,” al-Jaafari said “We are still in the preparatory stage, as I said, and talking about essential issues that touch a symbol of the sovereignty in Syria is ” a moving out” from the good negotiation manners and “a feverish endeavor” to make the second round of talks a failure.

“This speech is an anticipation of the indirect talks and a wrong reading of the references which govern our meeting here as this speech didn’t come in any document, and we are now at the beginning of the second round and we didn’t enter in the stage of the essence,” al-Jaafari affirmed.

He said that “those statements are not surprising for us because, since the first round, we opposed the presence of terrorists in al-Riyadh delegation.”

As for the reconciliations being carried out in Hmeimem airbase, al-Jaafari affirmed that these reconciliations are being done in coordination with the Syrian government, adding “we are full partners in these reconciliations which are done on the Syrian lands through our friends of the Russians.”

He added that putting preconditions will contradict the bases that we come for, as the meeting here in Geneva which is held under the auspices of the international mediator is a Syrian-Syrian meeting without any foreign intervention or any precondition.

Commenting on De Mistura statements on the Legislative elections that will be held on April 13th, and “the elections that will be run after 18 months”, al-Jaafari said “we didn’t hear such speech in our talks that were held between us, on the contrary, we said our point of view and he didn’t contradict this point of view.”
