Janusz Waluz Deserves No Parole - Successful ANC, SACP, COSATU and SANCO Gauteng Province Alliance Protest March
1 April 2016

The Gauteng SACP, ANC, COSATU, SANCO supported by several organisations held a successful protest march to the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Service Centre in Pretoria Tshwane.

The march was a vehement protest against prospects of granting parole to the polish immigrant assassin of the late SACP General Secretary and ANC NEC member, Comrade Chris Hani. Janusz Walus cold-bloodedly assassinated Comrade Chris Hani on the 10 April 1993.

An official letter was handed over by alliance leaders to the representatives of the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Service Centre on behalf of the department.

Amongst others the alliance partners expressed full support of the Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha`s decision to appeal the court judgement granting Janusz Waluz parole.

The judgement had earlier ordered his release within 14 days of judgement. We firmly believe that the minister took the correct decision to formally lodge an appeal.

We called on the correctional services centre to continue to keep Waluz in detention, not to release him until he served his full sentence, unless he makes a full truthful disclosure about the circumstances pertaining to the murder of Chris Hani.

The protest also delivered a stern condemnation of the highly insensitive savage remarks by the judge calling on the family of Comrade Chris Hani and the rest of South Africans to simply "move on".

Following these heartless remarks, the protest called on the Justice and Correctional Services Department to consider strengthen parole law, to place it in the service of victims and their families, as opposed to criminals` interests.

Stronger regulations will put a limit to discretionary concessions beneficial to criminals, which are contrary to national interest and more harmful to victims and their families.

The demonstration was led by Comrades Hope Mankwana Papo, ANC Gauteng Provincial Secretary; Jacob Mamabolo, SACP Gauteng Provincial Secretary; Dumisani Dakile, COSATU Gauteng Provincial Secretary; Thuliswa Nkabinde, SANCO Gauteng Provincial Secretary.
