African Union Mourns With Saharawi People Following the Death of President Mohamed Abdelaziz
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 31 May 2016: The Chairperson of African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has learnt with great sadness the passing away of the President of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, H.E. Mohamed Abdelaziz. The Saharawi leadership officially announced the death on 31 May 2016. He was in his sixties.

On behalf of the African Union, the Chairperson expresses deep condolences to the family of the late President Mohamed Abdelaziz, as well as to the entire people and Government of the Saharawi Republic.

The AU Commission Chairperson has ordered the flags of the African Union and that of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic at the AU Headquarters and all its Representational Offices to fly at half-mast, for three days, beginning on Wednesday, 1 June 2016.

“Our hearts and prayers are with you as you mourn the death of your leader and beloved President. Your loss is our loss.” Dr. Dlamini Zuma grieved with the people of Saharawi Republic, urging them to let the memories of President Abdelaziz spur them on as they continue the struggle for liberation he has been at the forefront for over 40 years.

The AU Commission Chairperson encourages the Saharawi people, as well as its allies to forge on with the struggle to attain their right to self-determination, until they are liberated and independence is attained to fulfill one of the dearest dreams and goals the late African leader died for.

The African Union, once again, reiterates its continued support and unwavering solidarity with the Government and people of Saharawi Republic.


Namibian Ambassador: Namibia Mourns the Loss of the President But “the Struggle Continues”

The Ambassador of Namibia in Ethiopia, H.E. Monica Nashandi, visited the Saharawi Embassy on Wednesday 1st June 2016 to presence her respect and condolences to the people of the Saharawi Republic for the loss of the late President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz.

“On behalf of the government and people of the Republic of Namibia, I would like to express our deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the dear brothers and sisters of Western Sahara at the loss of our dear President”.

She considered that “it is a great pity that he could not live to witness the decolonization of his country”, asserting that “Namibia will always stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with our brothers and sisters until victory is achieved. The struggle continues”.

The Embassy opened a book of condolence at the Chancery for one week starting from June 1st to June 7th as follows:

Ambassador of Mozambique presents his condolences to the Saharawi people for the loss of the President

The Ambassador of Mozambique in Ethiopia, H.E. Manuel Goncalves, visited the Saharawi Embassy on Wednesday 1st June 2016 to presence her respect and condolences to the people of the Saharawi Republic for the loss of the late President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz.

“It was with deep sorrow that we learnt about the passing away of H.E Mohamed Abdelaziz, President of the Saharawi Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front”, he stressed.

“On behalf of the people and government of Mozambique, I would like to express our deep condolences to the people and government of SADR in this sad moment. May God give him eternal peace”.

Algerian Ambassadors “President Abdelaziz lived and believed in the cause of his people and died martyr for it”

The Algerian Ambassador in Ethiopia, H.E. Rachid benlounes, visited the Saharawi Embassy on Wednesday 1st June 2016 to presence his respect and condolences to the people of the Saharawi Republic for the loss of the late President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz.

“It is with a great sorrow that I present on behalf of the Algerian Embassy and community in Ethiopia, and on my personal name, my condolences to the Saharawi people following the passing away of the freedom-fighter President Mohamed Abdelaziz, may Allah receive him in his mercy”, Ambassador Benlounes wrote in the book of Condolences.

President Abdelaziz, he said, “lived and believed in the just cause of the Saharawi people and died martyr for it”.
