On January 31, the 28th African Union (AU) Summit, held in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Abeba, approved a resolution demanding an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than half a century.

On the last day of the event, Heads of State and Government of the continental organization reaffirmed their unanimous rejection of the genocidal policy against the island.
The resolution also welcomes progress made between the governments of the Republic of Cuba and the United States of America toward improving their bilateral relations and creating mutually beneficial ties, based on peaceful coexistence.

Regarding U.S. policy toward the island, the text calls on President Donald Trump to consider the positive results achieved in bilateral relations over recent years.

Meanwhile, speaking during the plenary session held January 30, President of the AU Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, demanded an end to the blockade as well as the return to Cuba of the territory illegally occupied, against the will of the Cuban people and government, by the U.S. Naval Base in Guantánamo.
