President Raúl Castro Attends May Day March in Havana
Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee First Secretary and President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Raúl Castro, attended the national march commemorating International Workers Day, in Havana’s José Martí Plaza de la Revolución.
At 7:30 a.m. on this glorious morning, Cuba’s national anthem announced the beginning of the celebration, led and witnessed by thousands of the capital’s residents, who began gathering in the dawn hours on Paseo Avenue and streets leading to the parkway, forming a compact march of the Cuban people who reaffirmed their support for the Revolution and commitment to building a prosperous, sustainable, socialist society.
“The massive presence of workers and the entire people in our plazas and avenues, is an expression of this willingness, which constitutes an authentic message to the world reaffirming our unity and unwavering support for the Revolution, Fidel and Raúl, as well as our full commitment to continue defending a free, sovereign homeland, such as we have today,” said Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, member of the Central Committee and the Council of State, and President of the Cuban Workers’ Federation.
At 7:45 am, the health workers’ contingent kicked off the march, carrying a massive banner reading, “Workers united in the construction of socialism.”
Joining the Cuban people for this important event were more than 1,700 leaders of trade unions, social movements and solidarity with Cuba groups, from 78 countries.
