Joyce Mujuru: The Woman Who Would Be President of Zimbabwe

The woman who would be president of Zimbabwe

By By Basildon Peta

At the moment, the odds seem stacked against her. But her ascension to Zimbabwe's highest office cannot be ruled out.

In fact, many ruling party insiders still consider her to be very much in the running to succeed President Robert Mugabe.

Until recently, Joyce Mujuru, 52, enjoyed Mugabe's personal support and appeared to be his obvious choice for successor.

'They have lost a battle, but they think they haven't lost the war yet'
Mugabe even risked splitting his party in 2005 after handpicking Mujuru to fill the deputy president post left vacant by the death of Simon Muzenda.

This came at the expense of Emmerson Mnangagwa, who had the most support for the job. Soon after, Mugabe all but confirmed his choice of Mujuru as successor, telling her at a public rally not to confine herself to being deputy but to "aim higher".

The tables turned on Mujuru when she and her powerful husband, the former Zimbabwe army commander, Solomon Mujuru, grew too impatient to become Zimbabwe's next first family.

They successfully lobbied the party to block Mugabe's plans to extend his rule until 2010 by postponing next year's presidential elections. They also incensed Mugabe by their alleged involvement in a book by the former Zanu-PF secretary-general Edgar Tekere, which questioned Mugabe's role in the liberation struggle.

Facing severe internal resistance, a furious Mugabe dropped plans to stay in power until 2010 but then announced he would make himself available as the party's presidential candidate next year. He excoriated Joyce Mujuru in a state television interview for backing internal party dissent and said she had ruined her chances of succeeding him.

At a central committee meeting in March, Mugabe's candidature was railroaded by his supporters, led by secretary for the commissariat Elliot Manyika, and little debate was allowed.

But the Mujurus struck back. They managed to force the convening of a special congress later this year at which the ruling party would have to formally endorse Mugabe's candidature.

This they achieved despite the argument by Mugabe's supporters that he was elected as party leader at the 2005 congress and that this mandate allowed him to stand on behalf of the party without the endorsement of a special congress.

Party insiders said the Mujurus certainly haven't given up. They are now involved in serious manoeuvring to block Mugabe's endorsement at the special congress.

"They have lost a battle, but they think they haven't lost the war yet," said a party insider who preferred anonymity.

If the Mujurus manage to turn the tables and to block Mugabe's endorsement, then Joyce Mujuru's candidature is all but guaranteed. If they fail, the Mujurus still command enough support and financial resources to secure the presidency at some time in the future when the 83-year-old Mugabe eventually goes.

"Either way we are faced with the reality of a Mujuru presidency," said political observer Simon Mushayavanhu.

The big question is: will they be an improvement on Mugabe or actually be worse?

Mujuru's husband, Solomon, wants her to occupy the top seat so that he can be the power behind the throne and consolidate his vast, controversial business empire.

The Mujurus got married in the liberation struggle and at the tender age of 25, at independence in 1980, Joyce Mujuru became Mugabe's youngest cabinet minister, despite being barely literate. She has since educated herself through correspondence courses and recently earned a degree at a small university for women in Marondera.

It is Mujuru's tough talking and her controversial business dealings with her husband that sends cold shivers down the spines of many.

On occasion Mujuru has far outdone Mugabe's confrontational and divisive rhetoric. In the liberation struggle, she gave herself the nom de guerre, Teurai Ropa, which means "spill blood".

She has boasted how as a young woman during the war she grabbed an AK-47 rifle from a dying guerrilla fighter and single-handedly shot down and destroyed a Rhodesian Air Force helicopter, killing all aboard. Her claim has never been independently verified by anyone who fought alongside her in the liberation war.

When violent land seizures began in 2000, Mujuru kept to the spirit of her nom de guerre by urging Zimbabweans not to hesitate to "spill the blood of white farmers" to recapture their land heritage.

She is said to have personally led several land invasions and threatened families with death unless they vacated their properties. At a time when Zimbabwe needs a conciliator, she seems to represent the opposite.

Her husband Solomon had no qualms in invading and seizing Guy Watson-Smith's 4 500 hectare farm south of Harare and then selling off equipment on the farm.

The High Court declared Mujuru's occupation of the farm and subsequent disposal of equipment worth more than R2-million illegal.

But Solomon Mujuru has remained on the farm since 2001 and Watson-Smith has given up on ever getting his farm back. Reports have suggested that the Mujurus control more than 30 farms between them.

They have been linked to corruption and looting wrangles at the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (Zisco) and in serious irregularities in Solomon Mujuru's acquisition of Zimbabwe's only diamond mine.

They have also been accused of involvement in shady foreign currency dealings.

In fact, when they fell out with Mugabe, the president indirectly accused the Mujurus of smuggling diamonds.

The conventional wisdom in Zimbabwe now is that anyone who succeeds Mugabe cannot but do better. But judging by the calibre of the candidates in the succession race, this is by no means guaranteed.

It is a sad measure of the rot in Zimbabwean society that the Mujurus are still contenders for succession at a time when the country needs a serious renewal of leadership.

Correcting Myths and Legends: An Interview With Arthur Lee (1945-2006) of LOVE

Correcting Myths and Legends: An Interview With Arthur Lee (1945-2006) of LOVE

Arthur Lee is one of the most notorious and enigmatic characters in music. A songwriter cast in the annuals of rock as sitting precariously between a genius pop eccentric like Brian Wilson and genius rock casualty ala Syd Barrett and Skip Spence. When Love was on the rise in the mid-60s Lee was a true original - one of the first LA hippies, part-hustler, part-psychedelic dandy - a black man brought up on R&B but equally inspired by the likes of Roger McGuinn, the Beatles and the Stones.

Love's 1966 debut was clenched fisted, flower punk - the Byrds with balls. The follow up Da Capo was an amazing leap forward. Then in late 1967 they unleashed their masterpiece Forever Changes. Their trademark garagey aggressiveness was dropped for something entirely different - music with a much lighter feel courtesy of prominent acoustic guitar, strings and horns (although a sinister undertow was still very evident). Considered a flop at the time of release, Forever Changes is now a staple for any music fan's diet. Lee is set to tour Australia and perform it in its entirety with a backing band complete with string and horn sections.

But interest in Arthur Lee goes beyond the music. Over the years his eccentricities have fuelled an array of myth and rumour that continue to flourish around him. In 1996, he was convicted on gun charges and sentenced to a prison term due to California's strict three strikes and you're out rule. It's little more than a year since he was released after serving nearly six of a 12-year sentence.

How many times have you been to the crossroads?

Of life? How many times? I think that should've been my last name - Arthur Crossroads.

There's some pretty crazy stories out there about you. What's the best rumour you've heard about yourself?

That I blew my brains out at the end of 'Seven and Seven Is' in San Francisco. That's really something and that we hung our road manager. (Laughs) I mean Jesus Christ. There's a magazine called 'The Castle' and whatever anybody writes this guy publishes and it's phenomenal to me. Not only is it absurd but … I don't know all publicity is good publicity but there's so many untruths about the band members. I just want to set the record straight because I was there and I'm the one that people are talking about. I'm not trying to correct anybody about what they've built up in the mind about the type of person that I am. But I read this stuff and it's so ridiculous.

Are you surprised that other people view you as an enigmatic character?

I guess it would pretty mysterious if you did an album like Forever Changes and you didn't promote it. That's either strange or stupid. But the thing about that was when I made the switch from my original band to the fourth album I did, 'For Sail', those guys that I got to play on that album they couldn't stand Forever Changes. They didn't want to play anything like that. So I had to write according to the people I had acquired. For me it was a challenge. Everybody doesn't like Forever Changes - some people like 'Vindicator' (Lee's wild 1972 solo album. But my thing is to play the best of all kinds of music and to not be categorised as a rock musician. I mean I am but I can play different things - I can play the blues, I can play jazz, I can play classical music.

What's the biggest misconception about you?

There's too many to name and that's why I've written a book. It explains a lot of the rumours and a lot of the things that are untrue. I just lay it down exactly like it was in my eyes.

What myths and untruths are you hoping to dispel in your book?
Well you read it and you'll see. I've got a space for rumours, I've got a space for interviews, I've got a space for forgiveness. I've written the way I saw it. Who thought up the name Love? I did. That's why I'm able to carry on the name because it's my name to begin with. I just explain the way that I feel about the people who played on the records, on the shows from high school to today.

Have you read Michael Stuart's (former Love drummer) book 'Pegasus Carousel'?

No. You know it's a funny thing about Michael Stuart. I don't know what he's talking about because I never hung around with that guy. I don't know what in the world he could possibly say? I could count the times I hung around with Michael Stuart. I mean he was like a gift from God as far as being a drummer and playing on that Forever Changes album. I couldn't ask for a better person to play that's what I have to say about him. But as far as my personal life? I don't have a personal thing with Michael Stuart. I might read what he has put down. I'm glad that I inspired him or had something for him to write a book but I don't even know the guy. He was a musician that I picked up. Don Conka was the drummer for the Love band but he just never got it together to show up at the dates that I did. We were the Grass Roots, we were the original Grass Roots. That's how I thought up the name. Instead of fighting City Hall because I hadn't registered my name it became Love.

And what about the Barney Hoskyns' book 'Alone Again Or'?
Who? Oh, I think it's Brian Hoskyns. I think those books about me are disasters. I think they're people who are trying to make a fast buck. Jesus Christ all the guy did was put down different things that he'd read in interviews. That's the Mojo guy, right?

Yeah. There are a couple of horrible books out about me. This is what I think about it - I think I might've read maybe three pages and it was so ridiculous I didn't go any further. That's what I think about Brian Hoskyns. I can't go any further than about four pages. I wish I had it as easy as these people do to compile rumours. That's all that was. There's no facts except for things that are in black and white by the law. They're kind of hard up guys. If they'd come to me and asked me I could've helped them out. But I'm glad they didn't and I'm glad I've finally got a chance to write my book. It should be out in about six months.

Why do you think records you wrote as a young man have proved so timeless?

I planned on retiring when I was 21 so I wanted something to last. I needed something to pay the bills you know what I mean. But looking at life the way I looked at life with the war and different things that I write about it seems to be the same thing that is happening today. Exactly the same y'know so that's why it's timeless because the same thing is occurring all the time.

You sound very wizened at 21, 22 years old?

I thought I was going to die when I was 22. I had to cram everything in. That was like my last … You know when you're young, man, you think of foolish things like death and stuff like that. All of a sudden you're not at home with anymore, you're out on your own, experimenting with different things and I always wanted to know why my heart's beating. (Laughs) Is it going to stop now or what? At the time I thought Forever Changes was going to be my last words. My last words to this world would be forever changes because this world forever changes. If someone asked me if I was on my way to another planet or another incarnation or whatever and they asked me how I feel about earth I'd say 'forever changes'.

What's the song off Forever Changes that means the most to you?

I don't know. I like them all. I don't have a favourite off the Forever Changes album. I think each song is different. I especially like 'Alone Again Or' which wasn't written by me. It was written by Bryan Maclean. I like that, I like 'The Red Telephone', 'You Set the Scene' that's pretty good stuff. I don't get tired of hearing it, I don't get tired of singing it I know that. But I really don't want to become a Little Richard character and play the same songs I played thirty five, forty years ago. I don't want to be that kind of musician.

Why do you think Love were able to move seemly easily from being a garage band to incorporating strings and horns?

That's a rumour too. Garage band? What do you mean by that. That's a fuckin' insult - a garage band! Jesus Christ, how did I go from the greatest album of all times to a garage band? In fact it was a garage band (laughs). We rehearsed the whole first album in my garage at my mother's house. As far as the label's go I've been labelled folk rock, rock, psychedelic, alternative. The same songs have been labelled twenty different ways since I wrote them.

Obviously the original Love had a bitter break up and there's been a lot said between you over the years. How do you feel about your former band mates like the late Bryan Maclean and Johnny Echols now?

As far as musicians? Again I couldn't have asked for better musicians as far as what I wrote and they played. I'm sorry about the death of Bryan Maclean but to me he's not even dead. The same feeling I had for him when he was alive is the same feeling I have for him now. I had a strong feeling about Bryan Maclean and I can't wait for you to read it. It'll probably trip you out.

It was said that your indifference to touring in the 60s kept the band from reaching a national audience...

Well, the band was strung out on heroin, man. And I've got the heroin jacket but I detest heroin. I hate what it does to people. I mean whatever floats your boat but I wasn't the one but I got the label. I didn't like heroin. I went a different way. You have to have a band to go on tour and you can't go with a band that's asleep. Dragging around dead luggage, man, what would I want to do that for? But I'm fortunate now. I mean there's a time and a place and my time is now.

Do you think it's ironic you're now touring the world and beyond?

I just think it's all God's plan. There's a time to go and a time to stay and now it's my time to go. Thirty-five years later the music sounds as fresh as a daisy.

Can you tell us about the new song 'My Anthem' with its bagpipes etc?

Oh, that one? That was a song that people didn't like but I didn't think they were going to be that serious, these journalists. Man, they're really putting my songs down (laughs). Like I was in Manchester and I don't care. It's just a different song, just another song. But 'My Anthem' is definitely my song, things that have happened to me and things that I feel strongly about in life. But that's just one song. There isn't another song like that on the whole album that I'm working on. I like the song myself I don't care what anybody else says. I like it and intend to improve it before the final mixing. It was something that came off the top of my head in England although I'd written the song many years ago.

So you're recording a new Love album?

I'm working on trying to do one of the better albums of my life. It won't be Forever Changes. These guys who ask can you write something like Forever Changes. I mean how many Mona Lisa's have you seen? There's one Mona Lisa, there's one Forever Changes.

Johnny Echols on the Evolution of LOVE

Johnny Echols on the Evolution of LOVE

After playing at the "Brave New World" for what seemed a lifetime, we (reluctantly) decided it was time, we moved onward and upward!
The group accepted a job at Bido litos, which was an acronym for [Bill Dorothy, Linda and Tommy.] Tommy Thompson, the son and "braintrust" of the family that owned the club, had made the Grassroots an offer, we "couldn't" refuse. Since we would be the first group, to play there, we would have the opportunity, to design the stage and sound system, as a "showcase" for us.

It became readily apparent, that our move to the new club, would present the "perfect" time and space, for us to find a new name, and soon after we began playing at Bido litos "serendipity" stepped up and smiled on us.

Bryan, Arthur and I were Driving along Beverly Blvd. when we noticed a Huge billboard, for "Luv brassieres"; I mentioned to Bryan, that Arthur had once worked there, After he had finished laughing and "kidding" Arthur about it, Bryan said that "the Luv" would be a great name for our group! Arthur replied, that he was thinking the same thing, only spelled L.O.V.E. I joined-in (in complete agreement) but added, it should be "LOVE" with no [the] in front!

We were (all) elated, at how everything had fallen into place, "out of the blue and just like that," the decision was made, right then and there; now and forever we would be known as "LOVE" and that's exactly how the "Grassroots" got their new name!

After playing at Bido litos for a couple of weeks, we decided to allow the "crowd" to participate in the selection (even though the decision, was already "etched" in stone). Arthur gave them the names we were "considering" and without hesitation "LOVE" was the overwhelming favorite!

The choices were "Summers Children" "The Asylum Choir" "The Domino Effect" "The Coalition" and a few others, but we were (all) in complete agreement, that "LOVE" was the One! The next time we played Bido litos, was on a Saturday night. When the group was introduced, for the first time (anywhere) as "LOVE" the response was fantastic, the place was packed. Both the LA Times and LA Freepress had sent reporters, to find out what all the commotion was about.

They "found out" and in turn told the rest of Los Angeles, that in a place known as "Cosmo's Alley" (where the club was located) a group called "LOVE" had arrived!

Night after night, we played and the crowd responded, it was an experience, that is almost impossible to describe, unless you were there and a part of it!

Because of a dearth, of factual information pertaining to the group, what few "tidbits" that were available, have largely become
"apocryphal"!

While the counterintuitive, illogical and patently ridiculous mythology, that swirled around this group with an almost religious intensity: may have helped, to cultivate, a rather bizarre and "darkly romantic" cult status. The fact remains, that no matter how talented, dedicated and well-schooled the "alchemist" is, he cannot transmute "bulls**t into reality!

After much reflection, I have decided, to at least "attempt" to set the record straight, (hence my tales, from the trenches) not only am I responding from the perspective of one who was there, through every step of the journey and blessed with a "pretty decent" memory. I also bring an added bonus, a kind of "ace in the hole." I had the habit, which continues to this day, of putting it down on paper, resulting in a written journal, detailing the life and times of a group called "LOVE"!

That old aphorism "Truth is stranger, than fiction" could have easily, been written about this group, however it should be noted, that truth, (in this case) is a hell of a lot more interesting as well!

When Arthur and I made the difficult decision, too replace Bobby Beausoleil with Bryan Maclean, we had absolutely no conception of the events that were about to unfold, as a result of that action, just as a butterfly "flitting" from flower to flower in Sierra Leone, could not possibly conceive, that the fluttering of its wings could put into motion the "seeds" of the hurricane that would eventually decimate the city of New Orleans.

As I've said before, the both of us did a lot of soul searching, before concluding that of the two, Bryan was the better fit. He had a kind of "Star" quality that was evident, too any and all. Normally replacing a musician, would not have provoked such a quandary (we've had to make such moves, dozens of times as a necessary part of putting together a successful group) but over the several months, that we played together, we had developed a genuine fondness for Bobby, plus___his playing added a (raw) bluesy quality, too the mix.

Bobby was very personable, sort of a "gadabout" he knew everybody and everybody knew him, I think that's what caused Charles Manson to take notice of and befriend him.

Being that Bobby knew so many people, he would prove to be the ideal person, to introduce "Charlie" to many of the people who would eventually become his "family," Bobby was also very young and naive, thus easily manipulated by the older and more "streetwise" Manson.

The word if, is one of the "shortest" words in the English language, yet at the same time one of the "longest" in terms of potential consequences!

I've pondered this question many times over the years! [What if things had worked out differently?]

What if___ instead of "outright" firing Bobby, we had found a place for him. Hell___ if it didn't work out, with him as a third guitarist (Arthur didn't start playing guitar, until year's later) we could have used him as a roadie, or tour manager or something, (anything) there were many roles he could have played.

Continuing with the word "If": If we, or anybody had given Bobby a job with a band, he would not have been wandering around "aimlessly and therefore vulnerable to the machinations of the 'evil one"! Without the introductions that Bobby provided, Charles Manson might never have put together his "family"!

It's quite possible, that he would have become bored and just moved on!

Though it seemed like "light-years" it was only a few years after replacing Bobby, that the world would be shocked by those horrible and unimaginably brutal images.

Too this day, I cannot fathom, how that naive, carefree and genuinely likable "kid" could have possibly been involved, in that carnage!

That awful night, marked the end of the "innocence, of an entire generation. No longer could one instinctively "know" just by the way a person dressed, or talked or the length of their hair___that they were a kindred spirit, someone who was ["one of us"]

There was fear and mistrust, in "Our World" and thing's would never be the same again!

It was as though we had been evicted from the "Garden of Eden" for allowing into our midst, an unspeakable "evil" named Charles Manson!

The "Serpent" was revealed to have lived and moved amongst us, and we never even Knew he was there!

Just another day in the life: Johnny Echols

Frankie Lyman: A Musical Biography

Frankie Lymon: A Musical Biography

Frank Joseph "Frankie" Lymon (September 30, 1942 – February 27, 1968) was an African-American rock and roll//R&B singer, best known as the boy soprano lead singer of a New York City-based early rock and roll group called The Teenagers. The group included five boys, all in their early to mid teens. The original lineup of the Teenagers, an integrated group, included three African-American members, Frankie Lymon, Jimmy Merchant and Sherman Garnes, and two Puerto Rican members, Herman Santiago and Joe Negroni.

Together for only eighteen months, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers are nonetheless renowned for being one of rock music's earliest successes, presented to international audiences by DJ Alan Freed. The group is also noted for being rock's first all-teenaged act. Their first single, 1956's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", was also their biggest. After Lymon went solo in mid-1957, both his career and those of the Teenagers fell into decline. Lymon eventually fell into heroin addiction, and died in 1968 at the age of twenty-five.

Biography

Early years: joining the Teenagers

Frankie Lymon was born in Harlem, New York to a truck driver father and a domestic mother. Lymon's father, Howard Lymon, also sang in a gospel group known as the Harlemaires; Frankie Lymon and his brothers Louis and Howie sung with the Harlemaire Juniors (a forth Lymon brother, Timmy, was also a singer, but not with the Harlemaire Juniors). The Lymon family struggled to make ends meet, and Lymon began working as a grocery boy at age ten, augmenting his legitimate income with proceeds gained from hustling prositutes.

At the age of twelve, Lymon joined a local doo-wop group known as The Teenagers. The Teenagers had their origins in The Earth Angels, a group founded at Edward W. Stitt Junior High School in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan by second tenor Jimmy Merchant and bass Sherman Gaines. Eventually, Gaines and Merchant had added lead singer Herman Santiago and baritone Joe Negroni to their lineup and evolved into The Coupe De Villes. Twelve-year-old Frankie Lymon heard the Coupe De Villes at a school talent show, and, befriending Santiago, eventually became a member of the group, now calling itself both The Ermines and The Premiers.

"Why Do Fools Fall in Love": fame and success

One day in 1955, a neighbor gave The Premiers several love letters that had been written to him by his girlfriend, with the hopes that he could give the boys inspiration to write their own songs. Merchant and Santiago adapted one of the letters into a song called "Why Do Birds Sing So Gay?" With Lymon's input, the song became "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". The Premiers, now calling themselves The Teenagers, got their first shot at fame after impressing Richard Barrett, a singer with The Valentines. Barrett in turn got the group an audition with record producer George Goldner. However, on the day of the group's audition, Santiago was sick, and Lymon led the Teenagers through "Why Do Fools Fall in Love".

Goldner signed the quintet to Gee Records, and "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" became their first single in January 1956. The single peaked at number-three on the Billboard pop singles chart, and at number-one on the Billboard R&B singles chart. Several other R&B top ten singles followed over the next year, among them "I Want You To Be My Girl", "I Promise To Remember", "Who Can Explain?", "Out in the Cold Again", and "The ABC's of Love", although no other Teenagers single entered the pop chart. "I Am Not A Juvenile Delinquent" and "Baby Baby" were also popular Teenagers releases. With the release of "I Want You to Be My Girl", the group's second single, The Teenagers became Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. A long-playing album, The Teenagers Featuring Frankie Lymon, was issued in December 1956.

The group's success made Frankie Lymon the first black teen idol. In March 1956, the Teenagers began appearing with pioneering rock and roll DJ Alan Freed's rock-and-roll revues, performing alongside acts such as Little Richard, The Platters, and Bill Haley and His Comets. The group also appeared in two of Freed's early rock and roll films, Rock, Rock, Rock (1956) and Mister Rock and Roll (1957), and performed on Freed's radio and television programs. While touring with the Platters, Lymon befriended that group's sole female singer, Zola Taylor, whom he later began a romantic relationship with.

Going solo

In early 1957, Lymon and the Teenagers split apart while on a tour of Europe. During an engagement at the London Palladium, Goldner began pushing Lymon as a solo act, giving him solo spots in the show. Lymon began performing with backing from pre-recorded tapes. The group's latest singles, "Out In The Cold Again" and "Goody Goody", retained the Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers credit, but were actually solo recordings (with backing on "Goody, Goody" and its b-side by session singers). Lymon had officially departed from the group by September 1957; an in-progress studio album called Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers at the London Pallladium was instead issued as a Lymon solo release.

As a solo artist, Lymon was not a success. Beginning with his first solo release, "My Girl", Lymon was moved to Roulette Records. On a July 19, 1957 episode of Freed's live ABC TV show The Big Beat, Lymon began dancing with a white teenage girl while performing. His actions caused a scandal, particularly among Southern TV station owners, and The Big Beat was subsequently canceled.

Lymon's slowly tapering sales fell sharply after his voice changed and he lost his signature soprano voice. Adopting a falsetto, Lymon carried on. His highest charting solo hit was a cover of Thurston Harris' "Little Bitty Pretty One", which peaked at number 58 on the R&B charts in 1960. Having been addicted to heroin since age 16, Lymon fell further into his habit, and his performing career went into decline. In 1961, Roulette, now run by Morris Levy, ended their contract with Lymon and the singer entered a drug rehabilitation program.

After losing Lymon, the Teenagers went through a string of replacement singers, the first of whom was Lymon's immediate successor Billy Lobrano. By 1959, Howard Kenny Bobo was the lead singer of the Teenagers; a year later, Johnny Houston was on lead. The Teenagers, who had been moved by Morris Levy onto End Records, were released from their contract in 1961. The Teenagers briefly reunited with Lymon in 1965, without success.

Later years and death

Over the next four years, Lymon struggled through short-lived deals with 20th Century Fox Records and Columbia Records. Lymon began a relationship with Elizabeth Waters, who became his first wife in January 1964. Lymon's marriage failed, and he moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s, where he began a romantic relationship with Zola Taylor. He appeared at the Apollo as part of a revue, adding an extended tap dance number. His final television performance was on Hollywood a Go-Go in 1965, where the then twenty-two year old singer lip-synched to the recording of his thirteen-year-old self singing "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". Taylor claimed to have married Lymon in Mexico in 1965, although their relationship ended several months later because of Lymon's drug habits.

The same year, Lymon was drafted into the United States Army, and stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia near Augusta, Georgia for training. While in the Augusta area, Lymon met and fell in love with Elmira Eagle, a schoolteacher at Hornsby Elementary in Augusta. The two were wed in June 1967, and Lymon repeatedly went AWOL to secure club dates at small Southern clubs. Dishonorably discharged from the Army, Lymon moved into his wife's Augusta home and continued to perform sporadically.

Traveling to New York in 1968, manager Sam Bray signed Lymon to his Big Apple label, and the singer returned to recording. Roulette expressed interest in releasing Lymon's records in conjunction with Big Apple and scheduled a recording session for February 28. Lymon, staying at his grandmother's house in Harlem where he had grown up, celebrated his good fortune by taking heroin -- he had remained clean ever since entering the Army three years prior. On February 27, 1968, Lymon was found dead from a heroin overdose. He was twenty-five years old. He was buried at Saint Raymond's Cemetery in the Throggs Neck section of The Bronx in New York. "I'm Sorry" and "Seabreeze", the two sides Lymon had recorded for Big Apple before his death, were released later in the year.

By 1973, the Teenagers had resorted to using a female singer to imitate Lymon's prepubescent voice; the last of their lead singers was Pearl McKinnon. The Teenagers disbanded in 1973. Sherman Garnes died of a heart attack in 1977, while Joe Negroni passed away a year later due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Santiago and Merchant have carried on since, touring at various times with three other performers as The Teenagers.

Legal issues

Lymon's troubles did not end with his death. After R&B singer Diana Ross returned "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" to the Top Ten in 1981, a major controversy concerning Lymon's estate ensued. Zola Taylor, Elizabeth Waters, and Elmira Eagle each approached Morris Levy, who retained possession of Lymon's copyrights and his royalties, claiming to be Lymon's rightful widow - Lymon had neglected to divorce both Taylor and Waters. The complex issue resulted in lawsuits and counter-lawsuits, and in 1986, the first of several court cases concerning the ownership of Lymon's estate began.

Trying to determine who was indeed the lawful Mrs. Frankie Lymon was complicated by more issues. Waters was already married when she married Lymon; she had separated from her first husband, but their divorce was finalized in 1965, after she had married Lymon. Taylor claimed to have married Lymon in Mexico in 1965, but could produce no acceptable evidence of their union. Lymon's marriage to Eagle, on the other hand, was properly documented as having taken place at the Beulah Grove Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia in 1967; however, the singer was still apparently twice-married and never divorced when he married Eagle. The first decision was made in Waters' favor; Eagle appealed, and in 1990, the New York State Supreme Court reversed the original decision and awarded Eagle Lymon's estate.

However, the details of the case brought about another issue: whether Morris Levy was deserving of the co-credit on "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". Although early vinyl single releases of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" credit Frankie Lymon, Herman Santiago, and Jimmy Merchant as co-writers of the song, later releases and cover versions were attributed to Lymon and George Goldner. When Goldner sold his music companies to Morris Levy in 1959, Levy's name began appearing as co-writer of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" in place of Goldner's. Lymon was never paid his songwriters' royalties during his lifetime; one result of Elmira Eagle's legal victory was that Lymon's estate would finally begin receiving monetary compensation from his hit song's success. In 1987, Herman Santiago and Jimmy Merchant, both then poor, sued Morris Levy for their songwriters' credits.

In December 1992, the United States federal courts ruled that Santiago and Merchant were co-authors of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". However, in 1996 the ruling was reversed by the Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit on the basis of the statute of limitations: copyright cases must be brought before a court within three years of the alleged civil violation, and Merchant and Santiago's lawsuit was not filed until 30 years later. Authorship of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" currently remains in the names of Frankie Lymon and Morris Levy.

Legacy

Although their period of success was brief, Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' string of hits were highly influential on the rock and R&B performers who followed them. Lymon's high-voiced sound is said to be a direct predecessor of the girl group sound, and the list of performers who name him as an influence include Ronnie Spector, The Chantels, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and Len Barry, among others. The performers most inspired by and derivative of Lymon and the Teenagers' style are The Jackson 5 and its lead singer and future superstar Michael Jackson. Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, Jr. based much of the Jackson 5's sound on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' recordings, and the Teenagers are believed to be the original model for many of the other Motown groups he cultivated.

Lymon's music and story were re-introduced to modern audiences with Why Do Fools Fall in Love, a 1998 biographical film directed by Gregory Nava, also the director of the Selena biopic. Why Do Fools Fall in Love tells a comedic, fictionalized version of Lymon's story from the points of view of his three wives as they battle in court for the rights to his estate. The film stars Larenz Tate as Frankie Lymon, Halle Berry as Zola Taylor, Vivica A. Fox as Elizabeth Waters, and Lela Rochon as Elmira Eagle. Why Do Fools Fall in Love was not a commercial success: although it met with mixed reviews, the film grossed a total of $12,461,773 during its original theatrical run.

Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000.

Africa Day 2007: AU Debate Intensifies; ANC Statement; Western Sahara, etc.

Debate over proposed African Union govt intensifies

By Joseph Ngwawi
Zimbabwe Herald

THE African Union has instituted an audit of its institutions as debate escalates on the form of a proposed Union government.

Chairperson of the AU Commission, Alpha Oumar Konaré, said the AU will finalise the audit "before it can conclude the debate of the formation of a Union government."

Existing AU institutions are the AU Commission, the Pan African Parliament and the Economic, Social and Cultural Council.

Other institutions of the AU are the AU Court of Justice, the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank, and the African Monetary Fund, but these are yet to be launched.

The commission is the secretariat of the AU, playing a central role in the day-to-day management of the continental body.

It is headed by a chairperson elected by the AU General Assembly comprising the leaders of the 53 African countries, the chairperson is assisted by a deputy chairperson and eight commissioners responsible for various sector portfolios.

The previous election method has been criticised for giving member states power over proposing and supporting individual candidates, it was also accused of leading to weak lines of accountability for the chairperson and poor cohesion within the AU Commission.

Konaré said the AU may have to think of a transitional formula that should see a new commission come into effect in January 2008.

The term of the current commission runs out this year. Konaré has already indicated he will be available for re-election.

Discussions during the Ghana summit of AU leaders in June will be devoted to the formation of a United States of Africa, a vision first mooted by Ghana’s first post-independence president, Kwame Nkrumah, and other African leaders in the 1960s.

According to an ambitious plan revealed at a meeting of civil society organisations held in Johannesburg, South Africa, the proposal to be presented before the African leaders will include a three-phase transition towards creation of the Union government.

The proposal was developed by the Committee of Seven tasked by the AU to produce a roadmap on the United States of Africa.

The first phase — running from this year to 2009 — will witness the formal launch of the Union government. It is envisaged that during this period a new executive commission — comprising of a president and vice president appointed by General Assembly as well as commissioners appointed by the AU Executive Council — will be in place. The council comprises of the ministers of foreign affairs of AU member states.

The second phase will run from 2009 to 2012 during which the Union government is expected to be fully operational and the constitutional groundwork for the United States of Africa will be laid.

It is envisaged that all the required structures of the United States of Africa at national, regional and continental levels will be in place during the final phase running from 2012-2015.

This will include the creation of a legislating African parliament directly elected by universal suffrage with proportional representation. This will mean that countries with large populations will have more members of the reconstituted PAP compared to the smaller countries.

There is, however, a lot to be done before the dream of a United States of Africa can become a reality.

A unified African government would demand, among other things, a unified strong economy underpinned by a convergence of economic indicators, and an effective continental parliament.

Africa has an interesting mix of economic performances, with some of the countries doing very well while others are not.

Set up in 2004, the PAP is advisory for the first five years, not legislative, and thus faces the challenge of being taken seriously in its deliberations and interventions.

As delegates to the CSO consultative meeting in South Africa heard, another challenge for the march towards the Union government will be the popularisation of the idea among African people.

The CSOs concluded that while the long-term vision of a Union government is desirable, current efforts are excessively focused on institutional reforms "rather than mapping out the implications for strengthened African citizenship and needs more popularisation and consultation with citizens."

The popularisation and consultations may have to take the form of national debates and public awareness programmes on the issue, the CSOs said.

"After carefully studying the Study for the Proposal for Continental Government and the Study into the Modalities for Continental Government, it is clear that without the full involvement and participation of African women and men, the vision of a People’s Union will not be realized. In this regard, the Pan African Parliament could play a pivotal role in catalysing informed dialogue at both continental and national levels," the CSOs said in a communique issued at the end of their conference.

It was agreed that CSOs must also take the lead on generating an informed public debate on the issue. More than 30 African and international CSOs working in more than 25 African countries participated in the first Consultative Dialogue with the Pan Africa Parliament under the theme "Building Effective Mechanisms for Civil Society Engagement with Pan African and Regional Institutions".

The dialogue took place on the sidelines of the 7th Ordinary Session of the PAP held from May 7-18 under the theme "African Union Government".

ANC STATEMENT ON AFRICA DAY, 25 MAY 2007

24 May 2007

On the occasion of Africa Day, on Friday 25 May 2007, the African National Congress pays tribute to the people and leaders of Africa as they forge ahead with the struggle for the total liberation of the continent's people.

This year's celebrations of Africa Day come at a time when the continent remains engaged in the effort towards the realisation of the long-standing dream of a united, peaceful, democratic and prosperous continent.

The commemoration of Africa Day also comes at a time when Ghana celebrates fifty years of independence. On 6 March 1957 Ghana became the first country in Africa, south of the Sahara, to gain independence from colonial rule. As envisioned by Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the country went on to serve as a guiding light of African independence and solidarity. Ghana's attainment of independence and the subsequent ideological support it extended to other colonised countries on the continent, culminated in the liberation of many of these countries from colonial rule.

This year's celebrations also mark the fifth anniversary of the African Union.

On 25 May 1963, the leaders of Africa made history and gave significant impetus to the continent's collective struggle for independence by establishing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). Nearly four decades followed in which African states stood united, while making efforts to give depth and meaning to their political independence and striving for the socio-economic development of their people.

The year 2002 saw the launch of the African Union (AU), an organisation that sought to continue with the emancipation of Africans as envisaged by the founders of the OAU, while translating the gains of independence into economic progress. The AU should further develop its capacity to guide our continent during this era of globalisation and enhance its capacity to serve as an instrument for unity, stability and progress within Africa.

The African Union has given birth to the Pan African Parliament (PAP), an historic development in the effort to bring together the representatives of all Africans. The creation of the PAP is the manifestation of the will of the African people to foster greater unity and economic integration on the continent and to mobilise its human and natural resources to meet the challenges of globalisation and bettering the lives of its people.

In welcoming the honour by the continent of hosting the PAP, President Thabo Mbeki called it "The African Parliament of Liberators", a fitting description as it has created a new space for all Africans to forge a collective identity and to act together in our interest within and between our countries, as well as in the many important global engagements with other regions and the rest of the world.

During the course of 2007, the ANC has set itself the task of working further to ensure that the AU lives up to the objectives for which it was created. The ANC will therefore strive to work to achieve greater unity and solidarity among the African states and the people of Africa; accelerate the political and socio-economic integration of the continent; promote and defend common positions on issues of African interest; promote peace, security and stability on the continent; establish conditions necessary to enable the continent to become a recognised player in the global political economy; and coordinate and harmonise the policies between existing and future regional economic communities.

Initiatives such as the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) provide a blueprint and a programme for coordinated progress across the different states of Africa in crucial areas of social and economic development. The growing optimism about Africa is accompanied by the growing confidence among the African masses that we have the capacity to solve our own problems. As an important part of this effort, we must continue to work for the success of NEPAD.

While the continent can pride itself with having made great strides towards the resolution of conflict in some countries long besieged by conflict and instability, many challenges remain. We cannot celebrate until all our fellow brothers and sisters on the continent achieve lasting stability and freedom.

The people of the Saharawi Republic remain engaged in a struggle for independence. The ANC and other progressive movements in South Africa have pledged to act in solidarity with the people of the Saharawi Republic in their quest for self-determination. The ANC therefore welcomes the activities in support of the Saharawi people currently taking place in South Africa, and urges all South Africans to lend their support to this struggle.

On this memorable day, 43 years since the inception of our first continental organisation, the OAU, the ANC calls on all Africans to rise as one and march together for lasting peace, integration and development on our continent. Acting in unison, we can build a better Africa and World.

PROTESTERS IN PTA SEEK INDEPENDENCE FOR WESTERN SAHARA

About 100 people gathered at the Moroccan Embassy in Pretoria in support of the Western Sahara's independence from Morocco.

The march, which saw supporters from the Young Communist League (YCL) and the Congress of SA Trade Union, was also attended by ANC Youth League president Fikile Mbalula.

He said the African continent cannot celebrate Africa Day while other people were not yet free.

YCL president Buti Manamela said Morocco should end its form of colonialism on the people of Western Sahara.

Morocco invaded Western Sahara in 1975 after Spain withdrew its 90 year occupation.

Morocco then moved in to claim Western Sahara as its territory.

Although the claim was rejected by the International Court of
Justice, the Saharawi people have been fighting for their
independence since.

However, the African Union along with South Africa recognise
Western Sahara as an independent state.

UN Statement on Africa Day

May 25, 2007 at 6:07 PM

UNITED NATIONS May 25 (UPI) -- To mark Africa Day, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday called for more international effort to bolster African healthcare.

Africa has made efforts for its own renewal, Ki-moon said, but "extreme poverty -- together with lack of access to basic education, healthcare and adequate nutrition -- continues to prevent millions of talented, promising young people in Africa from fulfilling their potential."

The continued devastation caused by the AIDS epidemic is also standing in the way of African development, he said.

Africa Day marks the day in 1963 when African leaders committed to the Organization of African Unity framework for independence.

President Castro of Cuba Reveals Health Details

Friday May 25, 2:35 AM

Castro reveals health details but return to power unknown

AFP

Fidel Castro said in an article published Thursday he was on the road to recovery, but the Cuban leader gave no indication of when or if he will return to power.

Sidelined by gastrointestinal surgery 10 months ago, 80-year-old Castro lifted the veil on his health woes for the first time, admitting that he actually went under the knife several times and was fed through a tube for several months.

Although the article, which was distributed ahead of publication, gave the most comprehensive detail yet about the medical procedures he endured, what sparked the health crisis that forced him to hand power temporarily to his brother and defense chief Raul in July remains a mystery.

"It was not just one operation but several," Castro wrote in the communist daily Granma. "Initially there was no success, and that resulted in the prolonged period of recovery."

Castro, who turns 81 on August 13, said his weight has stabilized at 80 kilograms (176 pounds) and that he is now eating solid foods.

"Today I receive orally everything my recuperation requires," he wrote. "During several months I received an important part of my food through the veins and catheters."

"No danger is larger than those related to aging," he said, adding that he "abused" his health "in the uncertain times during which I lived."

Castro, who came to power in the 1959 Cuban revolution, said he is dedicating the current phase of his recovery "especially to reflect and write on issues," that he believes "are of certain importance and transcendence."

Castro said in his 11th article in the past two months that he uses his time "to read, receive information, talk by phone with numerous comrades and carry out the pertinent rehabilitation exercises."

While the Cuban president has yet to appear publicly since giving up power, he has been seen in photographs and six videos, and has met with his friend and ally Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and other luminaries, including a top Chinese official on April 20.

But Castro, who last appeared in public on July 26, indicated that there might be even fewer images of him in the future.

"I do not have the time at the moment for videos and pictures that require me dressing up and constantly getting my hair, beard and mustache trimmed," he wrote. "Moreover, such displays increase the number of interview requests."

Out of public view, the loquacious communist stalwart has penned newspaper articles since March 29 to convey his thoughts, about half of them to criticize biofuels being promoted by his arch-nemesis, the United States.

Castro's latest article, titled "For Deaf People Who Do Not Want to Listen," focuses largely on biofuels again. But he gives no hint of when, or if, he would return to his duties.

The government has kept details of his health a state secret, although officials have regularly given upbeat updates about his recovery.

The secrecy surrounding his medical condition has sparked much speculation.

In January, the Spanish newspaper El Pais, citing sources close to doctors who examined him, said Castro had suffered life-threatening operations and infections resulting from diverticulitis, perforations of small pouches in the intestinal wall that weaken with age.

But a Spanish doctor who examined him in December, Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, later said Castro was improving and that the only truth about the report was that Castro underwent an operation and had suffered complications.

The communist stalwart, who has lived through 10 US presidents, has so far defied predictions from top US intelligence officials that his demise was coming soon.

In January, then US spy chief John Negroponte said "Castro's days or months seem to be numbered."

His successor, Michael McConnell, said a month later: "This year is likely to mark the end of Fidel Castro's domination of Cuba," although he warned that "positive change is unlikely immediately following his death."

New Black Panther Blocked From Entering Canada

New Black Panther Blocked from entering Canada

By Norman (Otis) Richmond

Many in the African Canadian community are saying that El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) was right 99 and a one-half
percent on the question of Black liberation. They are questioning Malcolm X’s statement that "South is everything South of the Canadian border”. This is a result of custom officials stopping Malcolm’s namesake Malik Zulu Shabazz, leader of the New Black Panther Party from entering Canada from Toronto’s Lester Pearson international airport yesterday.

Shabazz was scheduled to speak at a Black youth rally at 2pm and later at Ryerson University at 7pm. Ryerson University voted not to allow the lecture and it was moved to the Nation of Islam’s building in another part of Toronto.

According to a May 14, 2007 article on Macleans.ca, head line reads “Jewish groups decry speech by New Black Panther Party leader”.” The piece goes on to say, “ A scheduled visit in Canada by the leader of the U.S.-based New Black Panther Party has raised the ire and concern of Jewish groups who say his views are hateful.”

Not only did Jewish organizations weigh in on this issue. Both the Federal and provincial governments jumped into the mix. The Globe & Mail reported Anita Bromberg, director of legal affairs for B’nai Brith Canada they took their objection to the office of Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day.

“A spokeswoman for Mr. Day yesterday refused to comment on whether the minister's office intervened to have Mr. Shabazz stopped at the border. But a terse e-mail statement suggested that Mr. Shabazz was viewed as a "threat."

"While I cannot comment on this specific case, I can tell you that our new government is committed to ensuring that Canada will not be safe haven for those who promote hatred and for those who pose a threat to our safety and security," Mr. Day said. "On this, our tolerance level is zero."

Premier Dalton McGuinty said Shabazz’s views “are clearly different” from those held in Ontario.”

Ontario Community Safety Minister Monte Kwinter said yesterday Shabazz “has a record of being anti-Semitic, he has a record of being anti-police and it’s very troublesome”.

The corporate media in Toronto joined in and attempted to crucify the organizer of a rally for “Education Not Incarceration” where Shabazz was to be the featured speaker. However, as Royson James pointed out in the Toronto Star, “Young Black activist has press for lunch”. James was correct.

The president of Black Youth Taking Action, Nkem Anizor, a 26 year old female university graduate used the press conference to invoke memories of W.E. B. Du Bois, J.A. Rogers, Marcus Garvey and John Henrik Clarke. Anizor, who is not from the “can we all just get along” school of thought pointed out to the gathering of scribes, “We are not on a plantation.”

"Don't think for a second that black people did not give education to the world. We civilized the entire planet," she said, from the Greeks to the Romans, thanks to the Egyptian civilization that predates Europe. "So if anybody knows how to teach it's us."

Anizor was clearly upset that the press only wanted to discuss Shabazz and not the issue of “Education Not Incarceration”.

The issues Black Youth

Taking Action wanted to highlight were:

1. SCRAPPING THE SAFE SCHOOLS ACT.

2. STOPPING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE OF THE BRAMPTON SUPERJAIL (put the $250 million dollars towards diversion, open custody, rehabilitation and alternative schooling programs)

3. CHANGING THE K-12 CURRICULM TO INCLUDE THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF BLACK PEOPLE TO CIVILIZATION

4. ESTABLISHING K-12 BLACK –FOCUSED SCHOOLS

W.E.B. Du Bois, Eric Williams, Walter Rodney and Gerald Horne have all documented how African slavery fuelled Capitalism. While Imperialism invokes anti Semitism Black Radicals talk about anti-Kemetism.

The ghost of Malcolm is haunting not only North America but, Britain, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia as well. Malcolm was the inspiration for the Black Panther Party which was started in Lownde County, Alabama with organizers like Kwame Ture and Willie Ricks then spread to Oakland, California with Huey P.Newton and Bobby Seale. The Black Panther Parties were secular formations; the New Black Panther Party unlike Ture’s and the Newton and Seale formations is based on Liberation Theology.

From Protest to Resistance: Call For Anti-War Mobilization in the Capital, September 22-29

From Protest to Resistance

The Democrats have caved in
Congress won't end the war!
It's up to the People - time to take it back to the streets!

June 16 -- Antiwar Strategy Meeting - Planning for the next "Surge" of Antiwar mass action - Summer and Fall -

SATURDAY JUNE 16 - 5 PM - at THE SOLIDARITY CENTER - 55 West 17 St. 5th Floor -(near 6th Ave. - take all trains to Union Square, or any other 14 street stations)

September 29 -- National March on Washington D.C. Assemble at the Capitol -- March on the White House -- proposed by the Troops Out Now Coalition - now endorsed by more than 200 organizations and individuals.

September 22 – 29 --Encampment to Stop the War in Washington D.C. - Stop the War Abroad and at Home

Today, the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate, who were brought to power with a mandate to stop the war, cut off war funds, and bring the troops home, betrayed that mandate and agreed to continue to fund the war in Iraq.

Their agreement to continue the occupation, without even the pretense of conditions, timetables, or benchmarks, is the culmination of a months-long process during which the Democratic Party has worked to neutralize antiwar sentiment by appearing to oppose the war while maneuvering to continue to vote for the funds.

This process began with the "non-binding" resolution earlier in the year; today the Democrats completely caved in and no longer offer even token resistance to the Bush Administration.

This betrayal comes as no surprise - many of us knew all along that this war will not be ended by politicians from either of Wall Street's political parties. Only a massive grassroots mobilization of resistance will bring this criminal occupation to an end.

It is time for the antiwar movement to move from protest to resistance, to become a force actually capable of stopping business as usual and putting an end to this criminal war. And we must do everything within our power to resist those who would chain the antiwar movement to either major party.

On June 16, from 1 to 5 pm, the Troops Out Now Coalition is hosting an Antiwar Strategy Meeting at the Solidarity Center (55 W. 17th St. 5th Fl, in Manhattan). All progressive organizations, coalitions, individuals -- anyone interested in mobilizing to shut down the war -- is welcome to join us for the discussion, as we examine and begin planning for the necessary "Surge" of antiwar mass action this Summer and Fall.

Some of the proposed topics for discussion include:

Assessing the state of the antiwar movement: where do we go from here?
Congress, Bush and the war funding issue: what's really going on?
From antiwar to anti-imperialism: making the connections - Iran, Palestine, the Philippines, Cuba, Venezuela, Africa etc.
The war at home: Immigrant Rights, Katrina, Anti-racist organizing
Update on the student movement
The growing GI antiwar movement

This meeting will be an important opportunity to discuss perspectives and plans for the next phase of the antiwar struggle, including the draft call from the Troops Out Now Coalition ( see http://troopsoutnow.org/sept2207call.html ) for a National March on Washington on September 29 and an Encampment to Stop the War, beginning the week of September 22 - 29.

The call for a National March and Encampment in Washington DC has already received wide support. In the past few days, activists and organizers from across the U.S. have contacted TONC, demonstrating a groundswell of enthusiasm for the call to go from protest the resistance. Some of the proposals we have heard in the past few days include:

Student organizations in several cities are discussing plans for a student strike that would include protests and direct action on their campuses, before joining the Encampment and March in DC.

Organizers are already planning car caravans and "peace trains" to DC for the Encampment.

Local organizations are planning to set up their own tents at the Encampment, with displays, teach-ins, literature, and protests to highlight various issues, including: immigrant rights, counter-recuiting, Katrina, Palestine, and more.

We urge you to read the proposal from the Troops Out Now Coalition - located online at http://troopsoutnow.org/sept2207call.html. Please consider endorsing the call, and email us with your ideas.

Then, join us on June 16 to continue this discussion and plan for the next phase of resistance to the war at home and the war abroad.

Please join us in helping to move from protest to resistance:

Behind the Darfur Crisis: The New Cold War Over Africa's Oil Resources

China and USA in New Cold War over Africa’s Oil Riches
Darfur? It’s the Oil, Stupid...

by F. William Engdahl
Global Research, May 20, 2007

To paraphrase the famous quip during the 1992 US Presidential debates, when an unknown William Jefferson Clinton told then-President George Herbert Walker Bush, “It’s the economy, stupid,” the present concern of the current Washington Administration over Darfur in southern Sudan is not, if we were to look closely, genuine concern over genocide against the peoples in that poorest of poor part of a forsaken section of Africa.

No. “It’s the oil, stupid.”

Hereby hangs a tale of cynical dimension appropriate to a Washington Administration that has shown no regard for its own genocide in Iraq, when its control over major oil reserves is involved. What’s at stake in the battle for Darfur? Control over oil, lots and lots of oil.

The case of Darfur, a forbidding piece of sun-parched real estate in the southern part of Sudan, illustrates the new Cold War over oil, where the dramatic rise in China’s oil demand to fuel its booming growth has led Beijing to embark on an aggressive policy of—ironically-- dollar diplomacy. With its more than $1.3 trillion in mainly US dollar reserves at the Peoples’ National Bank of China, Beijing is engaging in active petroleum geopolitics. Africa is a major focus, and in Africa, the central region between Sudan and Chad is priority. This is defining a major new front in what, since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, is a new Cold War between Washington and Beijing over control of major oil sources. So far Beijing has played its cards a bit more cleverly than Washington. Darfur is a major battleground in this high-stakes contest for oil control.

China Oil diplomacy

In recent months, Beijing has embarked on a series of initiatives designed to secure long-term raw materials sources from one of the planet’s most endowed regions—the African subcontinent. No raw material has higher priority in Beijing at present than the securing of long term oil sources.

Today China draws an estimated 30% of its crude oil from Africa. That explains an extraordinary series of diplomatic initiatives which have left Washington furious. China is using no-strings-attached dollar credits to gain access to Africa’s vast raw material wealth, leaving Washington’s typical control game via the World Bank and IMF out in the cold. Who needs the painful medicine of the IMF when China gives easy terms and builds roads and schools to boot?

In November last year Beijing hosted an extraordinary summit of 40 African heads of state. They literally rolled out the red carpet for the heads of among others Algeria, Nigeria, Mali, Angola, Central African Republic, Zambia, South Africa.

China has just done an oil deal, linking the Peoples Republic of China with the continent's two largest nations - Nigeria and South Africa. China's CNOC will lift the oil in Nigeria, via a consortium that also includes South African Petroleum Co. giving China access to what could be 175,000 barrels a day by 2008. It’s a $2.27 billion deal that gives state-controlled CNOC a 45% stake in a large off-shore Nigeria oil field. Previously, Nigeria had been considered in Washington to be an asset of the Anglo-American oil majors, ExxonMobil, Shell and Chevron.

China has been generous in dispensing its soft loans, with no interest or outright grants to some of the poorest debtor states of Africa. The loans have gone to infrastructure including highways, hospitals, and schools, a stark contrast to the brutal austerity demands of the IMF and World Bank. In 2006 China committed more than $8 billion to Nigeria, Angola and Mozambique, versus $2.3 billion to all sub-Saharan Africa from the World Bank. Ghana is negotiating a $1.2 billion Chinese electrification loan. Unlike the World Bank, a de facto arm of US foreign economic policy, China shrewdly attaches no strings to its loans.

This oil-related Chinese diplomacy has led to the bizarre accusation from Washington that Beijing is trying to “secure oil at the sources,” something Washington foreign policy has itself been preoccupied with for at least a Century.

No source of oil has been more the focus of China-US oil conflict of late than Sudan, home of Darfur.

Sudan oil riches

Beijing’s China National Petroleum Company, CNPC, is Sudan’s largest foreign investor, with some $5 billion in oil field development. Since 1999 China has invested at least $15 billion in Sudan. It owns 50% of an oil refinery near Khartoum with the Sudan government. The oil fields (see graphic) are concentrated in the south, site of a long-simmering civil war, partly financed covertly by the United States, to break the south from the Islamic Khartoum-centered north.

CNPC built an oil pipeline from its concession blocs 1, 2 and 4 in southern Sudan, to a new terminal at Port Sudan on the Red Sea where oil is loaded on tankers for China. Eight percent of China’s oil now comes from southern Sudan. China takes up to 65% to 80% of Sudan’s 500,000 barrels/day of oil production. Sudan last year was China’s fourth largest foreign oil source. In 2006 China passed Japan to become the world’s second largest importer of oil after the United States, importing 6.5 million barrels a day of the black gold. With its oil demand growing by an estimated 30% a year, China will pass the US in oil import demand in a few years. That reality is the motor driving Beijing foreign policy in Africa. (Source: USAID)

A look at the southern Sudan oil concessions shows that China’s CNPC holds rights to bloc 6 which straddles Darfur, near the border to Chad and the Central African Republic. In April 2005 Sudan’s government announced it had found oil in South Darfur whoich is estimated to be able when developed to pump 500,000 barrels/day. The world press forgot to report that vital fact in discussing the Darfur conflict.

Using the genocide charge to militarize Sudan’s oil region

Genocide was the preferred theme, and Washington was the orchestra conductor. Curiously, while all observers acknowledge that Darfur has seen a large human displacement and human misery and tens of thousands or even as much as 300,000 deaths in the last several years, only Washington and the NGO’s close to it use the charged term “genocide” to describe Darfur. If they are able to get a popular acceptance of the charge genocide, it opens the possibility for drastic “regime change” intervention by NATO and de facto by Washington into Sudan’s sovereign affairs.

The genocide theme is being used, with full-scale Hollywood backing from the likes of pop stars like George Clooney, to orchestrate the case for a de facto NATO occupation of the region. So far the Sudan government has vehemently refused, not surprisingly.

The US Government repeatedly uses “genocide” to refer to Darfur. It is the only government to do so. US Assistant Secretary of State Ellen Sauerbrey, head of the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, said during a USINFO online interview last November 17, "The ongoing genocide in Darfur, Sudan — a 'gross violation' of human rights — is among the top international issues of concern to the United States."

The Bush administration keeps insisting that genocide has been going on in Darfur since 2003, despite the fact that a five-man panel UN mission led by Italian Judge Antonio Cassese reported in 2004 that genocide had not been committed in Darfur, rather that grave human rights abuses were committed. They called for war crime trials.

Merchants of death

The United States, acting through surrogate allies in Chad and neighboring states has trained and armed the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Army, headed until his death in July 2005, by John Garang, trained at US Special Forces school at Fort Benning, Georgia.

By pouring arms into first southern Sudan in the eastern part and since discovery of oil in Darfur, to that region as well, Washington fuelled the conflict that led to tens of thousands dying and several million driven to flee their homes. Eritrea hosts and supports the SPLA, the umbrella NDA opposition group, and the Eastern Front and Darfur rebels.

There are two rebel groups fighting in Sudan's Darfur region against the Khartoum central government of President Omar al-Bashir-- the Justice for Equality Movement (JEM) and the larger Sudan Liberation Army (SLA).

In February 2003 the SLA launched attacks on Sudan government positions in the Darfur region. SLA Secretary-General Minni Arkou Minnawi called for armed struggle, accusing the government of ignoring Darfur. "The objective of the SLA is to create a united democratic Sudan.” In other words, regime change in Sudan.

The US Senate adopted a resolution in February 2006 that requested North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops in Darfur, as well as a stronger U.N. peacekeeping force with a robust mandate. A month later, President Bush also called for additional NATO forces in Darfur. Uh huh... Genocide? Or oil?

The Pentagon has been busy training African military officers in the US, much as it has for Latin American officers for decades. Its International Military Education and Training (IMET) program has provided training to military officers from Chad, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Cameroon and the Central African Republic, in effect every country on Sudan’s border.

Much of the arms that have fuelled the killing in Darfur and the south have been brought in via murky, protected private “merchants of death” such as the notorious former KGB operative, now with offices in the US, Victor Bout. Bout has been cited repeatedly in recent years for selling weapons across Africa. US Government officials strangely leave his operations in Texas and Florida untouched despite the fact he is on the Interpol wanted list for money laundering.

US development aid for all Sub-Sahara Africa including Chad, has been cut sharply in recent years while its military aid has risen. Oil and the scramble for strategic raw materials is the clear reason. The region of southern Sudan from the Upper Nile to the borders of Chad is rich in oil. Washington knew that long before the Sudanese government.

Chevron’s 1974 oil project

US oil majors have known about Sudan’s oil wealth since the early 1970’s. In 1979, Jafaar Nimeiry, Sudan head of state, broke with the Soviets and invited Chevron to develop oil in the Sudan. That was perhaps a fatal mistake. UN Ambassador George H.W. Bush had personally told Nimeiry of satellite photos indicating oil in Sudan. Nimeiry took the bait. Wars over oil have been the consequence even since.

Chevron found big oil reserves in southern Sudan. It spent $1.2 billion finding and testing them. That oil triggered what is called Sudan’s second civil war in 1983. Chevron was target of repeated attacks and killings and suspended the project in 1984. In 1992, it sold it's Sudanese oil concessions. Then China began to develop the abandoned Chevron fields in 1999 with notable results.

But Chevron is not far from Darfur today.

Chad oil and pipeline politics

Condi Rice’s Chevron is in neighboring Chad, together with the other US oil giant, ExxonMobil. They’ve just built a $3.7 billion oil pipeline carrying 160,000 barrels/day of oil from Doba in central Chad near Darfur Sudan, via Cameroon to Kribi on the Atlantic Ocean, destined for US refineries.

To do it, they worked with Chad “President for life,” Idriss Deby, a corrupt despot who has been accused of feeding US-supplied arms to the Darfur rebels. Deby joined Washington’s Pan Sahel Initiative run by the Pentagon’s US-European Command, to train his troops to fight “Islamic terrorism.” The majority of the tribes in Darfur region are Islamic.

Supplied with US military aid, training and weapons, in 2004 Deby launched the initial strike that set off the conflict in Darfur, using members of his elite Presidential Guard who originate from the province, providing the men with all terrain vehicles, arms and anti-aircraft guns to Darfur rebels fighting the Khartoum government in the southwest Sudan. The US military support to Deby in fact had been the trigger for the Darfur bloodbath. Khartoum reacted and the ensuing debacle was unleashed in full tragic force.

Washington-backed NGO’s and the US Government claim unproven genocide as a pretext to ultimately bring UN/NATO troops into the oilfields of Darfur and south Sudan. Oil, not human misery, is behind Washington’s new interest in Darfur.

The “Darfur genocide” campaign began in 2003, the same time the Chad-Cameroon pipeline oil began to flow. The US now had a base in Chad to go after Darfur oil and, potentially, co-opt China’s new oil sources. Darfur is strategic, straddling Chad, Central African Republic, Egypt and Libya.

US military objectives in Darfur—and the Horn of Africa more widely—are being served at present by the US and NATO backing of the African Union troops in Darfur. There NATO provides ground and air support for AU troops who are categorized as “neutral” and “peacekeepers.” Sudan is at war on three fronts, each country-- Uganda, Chad, and Ethiopia-- with a significant US military presence and ongoing US military programs. The war in Sudan involves both US covert operations and US trained “rebel” factions coming in from South Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia and Uganda.

Chad’s Deby looks to China too

The completion of the US and World Bank-financed oil pipeline from Chad to the Cameroon coast was designed as one part of a far grander Washington scheme to control the oil riches of central Africa from Sudan to the entire Gulf of Guinea.

But Washington’s erstwhile pal, Chad’s President for Life, Idriss Deby, began to get unhappy with his small share of the US-controlled oil profits. When he and the Chad Parliament decided in early 2006 to take more of the oil revenues to finance military operations and beef up its army, new World Bank President, Iraq war architect, Paul Wolfowitz, moved to suspend loans to the country.

Then that August, after Deby had won re-election, he created Chad’s own oil company, SHT, and threatened to expel Chevron and Malaysia’s Petronas for not paying taxes owed, and demanding a 60% share of the Chad oil prieline. In the end he came to terms with the oil companies, but winds of change were blowing.

Deby also faces growing internal opposition from a Chad rebel group, United Front for Change, known under its French name as FUC, which he claims is being covertly funded by Sudan. This region is a very complex part of the world of war. The FUC has based itself in Darfur.

Into this unstable situation, Beijing has shown up in Chad with a full coffer of aid money in hand. In late January, Chinese President Hu Jintao made a state visit to Sudan and to Cameroon among other African states. In 2006, China’s leaders visited no less than 48 African states. In August 2006 Beijing hosted Chad’s Foreign Minister for talks and resumption of formal diplomatic ties cut in 1997. China has begin to import oil from Chad as well as Sudan. Not that much oil, but if Beijing has its way, that will soon change.

This April, Chad’s Foreign Minister announced that talks with China over greater China participation in Chad’s oil development were “progressing well.” He referred to the terms the Chinese seek for oil development, calling them, “much more equal partnerships than those we are used to having.”

The Chinese economic presence in Chad, ironically, may be more effective in calming the fighting and displacement in Darfur than any African Union or UN troop presence ever could. That would not be welcome for some people in Washington and at Chevron headquarters, as they would not find the oil falling into their greasy bloody hands.

Chad and Darfur are but part of the vast China effort to secure “oil at the source” across Africa. Oil is also the prime factor in US Africa policy today. George W. Bush’s interest in Africa includes a new US base in Sao Tome/Principe 124 miles off the Gulf of Guinea from which it can control Gulf of Guinea oilfields from Angola in the south to Congo, Gabon, Equitorial Guinea, Cameroon and Nigeria. That just happens to be the very same areas where recent Chinese diplomatic and investment activity has focussed.

“West Africa’s oil has become of national strategic interest to us,” stated US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Walter Kansteiner already back in 2002. Darfur and Chad are but an extension of the US Iraq policy “with other means”—control of oil everywhere. China is challenging that control “everywhere,” especially in Africa. It amounts to a new undeclared Cold War over oil.
