ANC sends its condolences to the people of Haiti

14 January 2010

The African National Congress (ANC) sends its condolences to His Excellency Mr. Rene Garcia Prval, President of the Republic of Haiti, the Government and the people of the Republic of Haiti. Our deepest sympathy and condolences follows the disastrous earthquake that struck Southern Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, 12 January 2010.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the earthquake either emotionally and psychologically or through the loss of life of loved ones or destroyed infrastructure.

The ANC is gratified by the swift response of the South African rescue team, led by Dr Imtiaz Sooliman of the SA disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers. Gift of Givers is sending a team of 10 search and rescue specialists and they will be followed by a team of trauma specialists. We wish them well in their endeavour to assist the people of Haiti.

We also are pleased by the international community's response to this disaster. This is a reflection that the world when united can be able to conquer any challenge that it might be faced with. This further affirms our slogan that together we can do more.

Our thoughts are with the people of Hiati at this difficult time.
