Detroit -- Two Detroit police officers have been placed on temporary administrative duty after they returned fire and killed a 31-year-old east-side resident Sunday night.
The shooting took place in the 2600 block of Montclair Street after officers responded to a complaint of a man who had fired shots into a home the night before. On their arrival, officers encountered the suspect, who fled on foot. The man, who police have not identified, turned and fired several shots at the officers, according to Sgt. Eren Stephens Bell.
"The officers, fearing for their safety, returned fire," she said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He had served time in prison for manslaughter and drug offenses and was released in December.
"He had stated to several of his friends that he was never going back to jail," Stephens Bell said.
The two officers were not injured in the incident. They will remain on administrative duty while the incident is being investigated.
