US police have detained two more Occupy protesters in the Californian city of Oakland, turning the total number of anti-corporatism demonstrators arrested since September last year to close to 5,900.
The protesters were arrested during a peaceful anti-police rally outside Oakland City Hall on Saturday night.
More than a hundred protesters took part in the demonstration to condemn the brutal crackdown by the police on peaceful protesters across the country.
Police officers on foot as well as others in patrol cars and unmarked white vans closely monitored the protesters throughout the rally.
The protest campaign owes its inspiration to Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, which began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York's financial district on September 17 to protest, among other things, against the excessive influence of big corporations on the US policies as well as the unjust distribution of wealth and the high-level corruption in the country. Soon after its evolution, the OWS motivated anti-corporatism protests nationwide.
According to the website occupyarrests.com, with the exception of the recent arrests, at least 5,884 Occupy protesters have been apprehended since the emergence of the movement.
Despite the crackdown, the Occupy movement has now spread to many major US cities, while inspiring rallies in Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, and other countries.
