At least 59 people have been killed in a standoff at the Westgate Premier Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The incident has gone on for two days. The Somalia al-Shabaab Islamic resistance movement has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The long-delayed legislative elections scheduled for the West African state of Guinea-Conakry have been postponed once again due to unrest inside the country. The main opposition party had threatened to send its supporters into the streets if the vote was not delayed.
A former Navy officer from the West African state of Guinea-Bissau is slated to stand trial in the United States for drug trafficking. Bubo Na Tchuto was arrested in April during a sting operation by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Guinea-Bissau is considered a major hub in the international illegal drug market.
Finally, former Federal Republic of Nigeria Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent investigation into an alleged shoot-out between the State Security Services and the Boko Haram religious group in Abuja, the political capital of the West African country. Although the government is saying that the residence attacked was a hideout for Boko Haram, others say that innocent civilians were killed.
