Racial issues "are becoming more intense" in the United States, says Azikiwe.
The issue of race in the United States will escalate, unless Washington decides to bring about “some real, fundamental changes” for the country's African-American population, says a journalist from Detroit.
In a phone interview with Press TV on Saturday, Abayomi Azikiwe, editor at the Pan-African News Wire, said, “There has been no fundamental change in racial issues in the United States, even though there is [an] African American president.”
Azikiwe said President Barack Obama “has consistently ignored and denied the other side and that America still is institutionally racist and vastly unprecedented society.”
He made the remarks while commenting on demonstrations against the US police's fatal shooting of 17-year-old black teenager Laquan McDonald in Chicago last year.
Chicago officials released a video on Tuesday that shows white police officer Jason Van Dyke firing at McDonald 16 times for at least 15 seconds, even after the black teen falls to the ground.
Almost 2,000 protesters took to the streets in Chicago on the traditional "Black Friday" shopping day after the Thanksgiving holiday to demand justice for the black teen.
“These problems are not going away,” said Azikiwe. “They are becoming more intense and I believe that there will be an even broader and a deeper explosion across the United States.”
He also suggested that “there has to be some real fundamental changes to bring about the liberation of African American people as well as other oppressed people in this country.”
