At Least 12 Killed As Federal Troops and Al-Shabab Clash in Southern Somalia
January 7, 2016

Dozens of troops and militants have been killed in a fierce clash in Southern Somalia, sources confirmed.

The fighting erupted on Thursday early morning after al-Shabab militants launched an attack on an army base located in the outskirts of Baidoa town, which is the capital of South Central regional administration.

At least 12 people, mostly from the militant group al-Shabaab have been confirmed dead and 25 others injured.

‘’Their [al-Shabaab] aim was to take over the control of the army base so that they can carry out attacks in Baidoa,’’ said a local official.

Al-Qaeda-linked extremist group al-Shabab is battling the UN-backed government in Somalia, and has carried out a string of attacks in neighbouring Kenya. The group, has been pushed out of most of the main towns it once controlled, but it remains a potent threat.

It has been targeting key government and security figures in the country, trying to overthrow the government in the capital, Mogadishu.
