Angolan President Receives Cuban First Vice-President
Havana, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) Angolan President Joao Lourenço met with Cuban First Vice-President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who attended his inauguration ceremony here, the Cuban press reported today.

During the meeting on Tuesday afternoon, both leaders recognized the historic ties of friendship between the peoples and governments of Cuba and Angola, according to a communique published in Granma and Juventud Rebelde newspapers.

They also ratified the desire to expand political, economic and cooperation ties between the two nations.

Diaz-Canel conveyed a message of congratulations and greetings from President Raul Castro and thanked Angola for its stance in favor of the lifting the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.

Lourenço expressed gratitude for the presence of the Cuban delegation and sent his regards to President Raul Castro.

Diaz-Canel paid tribute today to the Cuban internationalist fighter Raul Diaz Argüelles (1937-1975), who was killed by a landmine in Angola.

During his penultimate day in Angola, where he arrived to attend the inauguration of President Lourenço, Diaz-Canel also planned a visit to the Museum of Military History in Marginal Luanda.

In addition to participating in the president's swear-in ceremony, the Cuban leader paid tribute to the first president and father of the Angolan nation, Antonio Agostinho Neto, at Independenc Square, a site where national sovereignty was proclaimed on 11 November, 1975.

Shortly afterwards the presidential inauguration ceremony, Diaz-Canel told reporters that Cuba will always be on the side of Angola, to which it is joined by historic ties of close brotherhood, solidarity, culture and politics. We have come here to ratify our willingness to continue to collaborate in all programs developed by the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Diaz-Canel said in Republic Square, which is adjacent to the Doctor Antonio Agostinho Neto Memorial.
