SACP Congratulates the World Federation of Trade Unions on its 72nd Anniversary
The South African Communist Party congratulates the militant and class oriented World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) on the occasion of its 72nd anniversary. Born on 3 October 1945 in the aftermath of the great Patriotic victory of 1945 and the defeat of fascist Germany in the Second World War, the WFTU immediately identified with revolutionary struggles against capitalist exploitation, imperialism, apartheid in South Africa and colonialism.
The WFTU founding Congress, convened in Paris, France, was attended by 346 representatives from 56 countries representing 67 million members, adopted a resolution recognising the right of workers in colonised countries to form their own unions. The resolution asserted: It would have been an incomplete victory if the peoples of the colonies and the territories of all countries were deprived of the rights of self-determination.
As a militant international trade union centre, the WFTU never collaborated with apartheid nor in any way aided imperialism in any part of the world. The WFTU was served by many of our erstwhile leaders who were either communists or trade unionists active in the South African Congress of Trade Unions, Cosatu's legal predecessor.
From our former General Secretary Moses Mabhida, communists and trade unionists such as Leslie Masina, Leon Levy, J.B Marks, Billy Nair, Stephen Dlamini, John Nkadimeng, Ray Alexander, Wilton Mkwayi, Mark Shope, Joe Kolokeng, Kay Moonsamy, John Taolo Gaitsewe, Archie Zola Zembe; Sibeko, Aaron Pemba and our stalwart EricStalin; Mtshali, count amongst the WFTU's most distinguished by their deep commitment to ending capitalist exploitation. The current President of the WFTU is Mzwandile Makwayiba, Nehawu President.
