The transition toward a new international order, challenges, threats and opportunities in the current context, are the central focus of the Third Strategic Studies Conference, an event that began October 11 in Havana, and will continue through October 13.
The opening day of the conference, which is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernesto Che Guevara, and marks half a century since the founding of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), saw the presence of José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera, member of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee Secretariat, and head of its International Relations department.
The Chairman of the organizing committee of the event, Adalberto Varona, offered the opening remarks. The Conference includes 129 presentations and 32 panels attended by representatives of 25 countries, including Cuba.
Meanwhile, Pablo Gentili, CLACSO executive secretary, referred to the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, a region where “extractive capitalism” continues to reign.
He highlighted three key issues: the first, related to the fact that the success of any social reform depends on political decisions; the second linked to the idea that combating poverty does not always reduce inequality and violence; and finally, the rejection of the idea that democracy is only a governance issue.
According to Gentili, even in times of economic crisis it is necessary to implement social inclusion programs if we want to transform the reality of Latin America.
