Highlights

Some 3,000 families were displaced by recent clashes in Sabratha, 2,000 of whom have been able to return to their homes. More than 500 houses were totally or partially destroyed. UNHCR is working with its partner LibAid and the Sabratha Local Crisis Committee to provide support to IDP returnees. The most pressing needs for those displaced or returning include temporary shelter, core relief items (CRIs) and medical support for specific cases. Today, UNHCR delivered 500 CRI kits to local authorities coordinating the IDP response.

On 11 October, transfers of refugees and migrants to the Dahman hangar assembly point in Sabratha continued. Throughout the day, authorities transferred individuals from Dahman to detention centres. Tonight, some 5,000 refugees and migrants are expected to spend the night at the Dahman assembly point. Humanitarian needs continue to increase, with psychosocial support, emergency medical care, food, water, CRIs and shelter being the most urgent. The presence of unaccompanied and separated children is of serious concern and UNHCR is coordinating appropriate follow-up.

UNHCR’s response

Today, at the Dahman assembly point, UNHCR distributed CRIs (including blankets, hygiene kits, clothing, and medical supplies). In response to many migrants and refugees sleeping in the open, UNHCR provided two tents to serve as medical facilities and overnight shelter. At Gharyan, UNHCR distributed 200 CRI kits (including clothing, hygiene kits, sleeping mats, mattresses and baby kits) and is planning for a food distribution over the coming days. A UNHCR tent was set-up to serve as a medical facility. Some 2,300 refugees and migrants are expected to be present in the centre by end of day.

In Tajoura, 890 CRI kits, in addition to hygiene kits, were distributed. Some 1,100 migrants and refugees are estimated to be at the centre. In addition, a boat carrying 78 migrants and refugees was rescued/intercepted at sea by the Libyan Coast Guard and disembarked at the Tajoura disembarkation point, where UNHCR and its partner IMC provided emergency assistance. At Triq al Matar, UNHCR distributed 500 CRI kits.
