The Minister of Defense Gen. Awad Ibn Ouf announced over Sudanese national television that longtime President Omar Hassan al-Bashir had resigned amid mass demonstrations which have continued over the last four months.

Azikiwe discussed the contemporary situation within the context of the plight of dependency facing most emerging post-colonial, neo-colonial and semi-colonial states in the 21st century.

This crisis has been compounded by the partitioning of what was once Africa's largest geographic nation-state, the decline of oil prices and the pressure exerted by the imperialist countries led by the United States.
