Chinese Company Signed Up to Build 35,000 Homes in Mozambique

CITIC Construction, a Chinese contractor, this week signed an agreement with the government of Mozambique to build 35,000 social homes in four provinces over a five-year period.
The agreement was revealed by public works minister Joao Machatine during a housing forum in Maputo, reports Chinese news agency Xinhua.
Machatine said 38% of Mozambicans are young and in dire need of adequate housing.
“This reality of homelessness is further aggravated by the combination of population growth coupled with the country’s high level of vulnerability to the climate change,” the minister said, according to Xinhua.
Included in the project are necessary roads, electricity, water and other utilities, said the business counsellor of the Chinese embassy to Mozambique, Liu Xiaoguang.
It will be delivered as a public-private partnership, said Xinhua, the total value for which was not revealed.
