AU summit opens in Ethiopia to discuss the African hotspots

A two-day summit of African Union (AU) leaders has opened in the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Ababa in a bid to discuss the continent’s trouble spots.
The meeting of AU leaders began on Sunday as security issues including instability in the West African country of Mali, violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the unresolved disputes between Sudan and South Sudan are on the top of the agenda.
At the opening of the summit, AU Commission head and the Gabonese politician Jean Ping expressed the bloc’s readiness to “contribute to the establishment of a regional force to put an end to the activities of armed groups,” in DR Congo.
Referring to the current crisis in Mali, Ping also noted that the conflict in the African state is “one of the most serious threats to security and stability of the continent.”
The event also focuses on the recent developments in war-torn Somalia and ongoing issues between Juba and Khartoum.
This is while the vote for the bloc’s top job is also another top priority of the meeting.
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma from South Africa is challenging Ping, the sitting chairman of the commission, following the two officials’ failure to win two-thirds of the vote at the last summit six months ago.
The 54-member body must agree on a new head at the summit. If no chair is selected this time around, Ping could legally be asked to stay on as leader until the next summit in January 2013.
