The victory of Gaza people over Israel during the eight-day war against the coastal enclave heralds the onset of a new era for the liberation of Palestine, an Iranian lawmaker says.
“This was a great victory after the 22-day war on Gaza [in 2008] and, after this, the Palestinian people can take the next strides to overthrow the Zionist regime [of Israel] and [facilitate] the return of Palestinian refugees to their motherland,” said Esmail Kowsari, a member of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, in a Thursday interview.
The Israeli regime waged a 22-day war on the densely populated Gaza Strip in 2008, which left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead including at least 300 children.
“Considering the new situation in the region, the domino-like fall of the puppet regimes supported by the US and this [Israeli] regime in the region, the likelihood of the Islamic Awakening sweeping other regional countries, and the fact that they [Tel Aviv and its allies] could not practically achieve anything in Syria, the occupying regime of al-Quds (Jerusalem) imagined that it could take an action against Gaza to both gain victory and restore the sagging morale of its people and forces,” Kowsari noted.
The Iranian legislator lashed out at the Israeli regime for its failure to accept the realities in the region and pointed to Tel Aviv’s miscalculation about the military prowess of the Palestinian resistance movement in the recent Gaza war as an example of Israel's profound ignorance.
On November 14, the Israeli regime launched a deadly offensive on the blockaded Gaza Strip, which killed more than 160 Palestinians and injured some 1,200 others.
In retaliation, Palestinian resistance fighters fired rockets and missiles into the Israeli cities, killing at least five Israelis.
On Wednesday, November 21, 2012, Egypt announced that the Israeli regime and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas had reached a ceasefire agreement.
