ZANU-PF’S Politburo met in Harare yesterday, signalling the beginning of its Annual National People’s Conference in Gweru, with senior leaders discussing a number of crucial matters, among them, the need for broad-based economic empowerment policies and the state of the party.
The meeting, which ended late last night, conferred liberation hero status on Cde Jabulani Mangena posthumously.
Cde Mangena — who was a Central Committee member and Mberengwa North legislator — died last week and was buried at his farm in Gweru.
The Midlands Province had requested that Cde Mangena be declared a national hero.
Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo told journalist that the Politburo also confirmed the conference agenda and programme.
“We started the conference today and tomorrow there would be a Central Committee meeting. We have approved the agenda and programme for the conference.
“Most of the work has been done and everything is on course.”
The meeting got a briefing from Cde Saviour Kasukuwere on the economic empowerment programme being spearheaded by the revolutionary party.
Under the empowerment programme, foreign-owned companies are obliged at law to cede 51 percent shareholding to indigenous Zimbabweans.
“We were given a presentation by Cde Kasukuwere and his staff. They presented a documentary called broad-based empowerment concept.
“It is an excellent document. We want it presented at conference. We will have intensive discussion on indigenisation.
“The conference will concentrate on broad-based empowerment concept which fits well with our theme — ‘Indigenise, Empower, Develop and Create Employment’,” Cde Gumbo said.
He said Zanu-PF national political commissar Cde Webster Shamu briefed the Politburo on the election of provincial chairpersons for Matabeleland North and Bulawayo provinces.
“The political commissar’s report largely dealt with the election of the chairperson for Matabeleland North province Cde Richard Moyo and Cde Killian Sibanda for Bulawayo.
“Politburo has approved their election as substantive chairmen,” he said.
Cde Gumbo said Cde Shamu’s report also touched on provincial inter-district meetings that were held in the party’s 10 provinces.
It took note of disturbances that rocked the inter-district meeting in Masvingo and investigations would be launched soon after the conference.
“All provinces carried their meetings well except for Masvingo where investigations will be carried out because there were disturbances. The thing was not carried out properly.
“Party sympathisers were denied an opportunity to attend and were chased away from the meeting by the current provincial leadership.
“You do not chase away party members. It will be dealt with by the national commissar after conference,” Cde Gumbo said.
