Mozambique’s First Lady, Dr Maria da Luz Dai Guebuza, has called for continued strengthening of ties with Zimbabwe, saying the two countries share many common experiences.
Speaking at the memorial service of her aunt, Mrs Ivy Mkudu, at the Mkudu homestead at Zongoro, Mutasa district yesterday, Dr Guebuza said the strong bond between Harare and Maputo was forged after bloodshed during the struggle against colonialism.
“Our relationship was cemented during the two countries’ wars of liberation. We fought together and a lot of blood was shed to liberate these two countries.
“We should continue strengthening our relationship because we have a lot in common,” she said.
Speaking at the same occasion, Zanu-PF national secretary for women’s affairs, Cde Oppah Muchinguri also chronicled the history of the liberation struggle.
She said Mozambique sacrificed a lot to see a free Zimbabwe.
“Dr Guebuza’s visit to the country is important as it came two days after we celebrated our independence. Our brothers and sisters in Mozambique played a very important role to see the liberation of this country.
“We were together in the trenches and we are happy to note that the relationship between the two countries is still strong. We should continue working together to develop our countries.”
The memorial service was also attended by Chief Mutasa, Zanu-PF Central Committee member Cde Mandi Chimene, National Consultative Assembly member Cde Irene Zindi, Zanu-PF Manicaland provincial members and villagers from the surrounding communities.
