There were two major international conferences held on the African continent last week. The World Social Forum in Tunisia and the BRICS Summit in Durban, South Africa.
The World Social Forum in Tunisia drew 70,000 people from throughout Africa and the international community. Issues related to the impact of the war in neighboring Libya, to the plight of the Saharawi people of North Africa, the Palestinian question and the struggles over access to clean water were discussed and debated.
In Durban, South Africa, the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, known as BRICS Summit was held for the fifth time.
This was the first time that the gathering was held in Africa. A plan for the formation of a development bank was put into motion.
Fighting has erupted in the ancient city of Timbuktu in Mali. French military forces say they have clashed with targeted Islamic organizations resulting in several deaths.
And finally, in the Central African Republic tensions are escalating in the aftermath of the seizure of power by the Seleka rebels over a week ago. The self-appointed leader Michel Djotodia has announced the installation of a caretaker government.
