Today is Africa Liberation Day, the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The African Union, its successor, is holding the 21st Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where heads of state are gathered from throughout the continent.

French and Niger military forces are in operation in areas areas where two bomb explosions took place on Thursday, May 23, against a uranium mining facility controlled by the former colonial power of France. The Signatories in Blood Islamist organization and the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa have jointly claimed responsibility for the operations in response to the French military occupation of neighboring Mali.

In the Gulf of Guinea there have been reports of piracy in the strategically located waterway off the coast of West Africa. Meanwhile, in relationship to the Horn of Africa nation of Somalia, a donors conference scheduled to take place in Kenya may not be adequate to encourage foreign investment in light of ongoing violence and regional conflicts.

Finally, there have been six straight days of rebellions in the northern European state of Sweden. The unrest has spread from the suburbs of Stockholm to other areas of the country. Discriminatory practices against immigrants from Middle Eastern and African states have been cited as the cause of the disturbances.

The program also features excerpts from speeches by Malcolm X on the role of Africa in the liberation struggle of African Americans. May 19 represented the 88th birthday of the martyred revolutionary leader.
