New US War in Syria, Iraq Will Last Up to Four Years: Ex-US Intelligence Official

A former American intelligence official says Washington’s new war in Syria and Iraq will continue for up to four years and that the US will keep ISIL alive as an adversary to advance its agenda in the Middle East.
Scott Rickard, a former American intelligence linguist in Florida, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Tuesday while commenting on the Obama administration’s refusal to discuss the massive costs of the offensive against the ISIL terrorist group.
On Monday, the Pentagon declared that the US and its allies have started airstrikes against ISIL in Syria. Fighter aircraft from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates took part in the airstrikes. The United States has already conducted dozens of airstrikes against ISIL targets in Iraq since mid-August.
"Unfortunately, this is yet another unnecessary war, obviously. The military-industrial complex has a massive amount of inventory of weaponry and also there are a lot of individuals who are promoting the use of this weaponry for both profitable and political gain," Rickard said.
"This war would easily last for at least two to four years. [US President Barack] Obama’s already indicated that he will not be the one to end it that the next president or perhaps the president following that will end it," he added.
"So, we are looking at a major escalation of warfare in the region, that's being planned and is also not spontaneous; this is not something that is reaction to ISIS, this is something that was CREATED and basically architected around the fabrication of ISIS," Rickard said, using an alternative acronym for the terrorist group.
The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, control large parts of Syria's northern territory. ISIL sent its fighters into Iraq in June, quickly seizing vast expanse of land straddling the border between the two countries.
"ISIS is not a force that could easily win any kind of battles, but these battles will be strategically fought to keep ISIS alive and keep them as an adversary in the region in order to gain hegemony, create the Kurdish state to split Iraq, and also topple [the government of] Syria," Rickard pointed out.
"So we are looking at an extremely strategic move by the West, the US and their allies. It has been very clear that the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey are all part of this crime and this unnecessary and extremely volatile activity and criminal warfare that's been instigated on Syria, on Iraq and on the individuals that were unfortunately duped into these mercenary groups that have been recruited from across the world, mostly from Saudi Arabia and Chechnya; they make up nearly fifty percent of the forces in the ISIS organization," he stated.
"So, really what we are seeing here is [that] the Americans alongside their allies, NATO and the Persian Gulf allies, have architected a situation whereby they can go in, destroy the current political infrastructure and then place in additional puppets to further divide and control the region," the former US intelligence official noted.
