AS Nigeria recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against insurgency leading to the declaration of ceasefire Friday, West African leaders have vowed to stand with Nigeria in her quest to bring insurgency to an end. They also acknowledged the successes recorded by the country in containing the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The commendations and acknowledgement came from visiting Ghanaian President, Mr. John Mahama after a bilateral discussion held between the two leaders at the State House Abuja. The meeting was attended by the top government functionaries from the two countries.
Briefing State House correspondents after the meeting, the Ghanaian leader confirmed that the two leaders discussed issues, which are of mutual benefits to the political and economic interests of the two countries. Top on the discussions was on the need to raise the volume of gas that would boost power supply not only in Nigeria and Ghana, but also Togo and Benin Republic, all which are members of the West African Gas Pipelines.
He said the African sub-region and indeed the entire Continent were impressed with the diligent and professional manner Nigeria handled the issue of the EVD, which broke out in the country, and recommended that the Nigerian success had become a model for the rest of the world.
According to him, “We commended President Jonathan for the very diligent manner that the government and people of Nigeria dealt with the outbreak that occurred here some months ago and how you were able to contain it. Indeed, the Nigerian experience has become a model for the rest of the world, and so Nigeria is assisting other countries in terms of their Ebola preparedness and how to handle such outbreaks.
“We are looking to call an emergency ECOWAS meeting of Heads of States and Governments sometimes in the first week of November to update ourselves on the issues of Ebola and how to work together to be able to contain the situation.”
