Africa can be a region of progress, the President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca, stated during a lecture this Tuesday, December 15, at the University of Havana.

In the talk entitled “Democracy and Development in Africa: A Personal View on Cape Verde”, the president referred to the challenges facing the continent in these areas.

“To be part of the solution means having a conscious attitude, to think with our own heads,” Almeida Fonseca stressed.

He also noted that globalization is a major destabilizing factor, which generates insecurity for people and societies, creating regional asymmetries.

On the ties between his country and Cuba, he assured that they constitute an example to follow in terms of solidarity between peoples.

The Rector of the University of Havana, Gustavo Cobreiro, on welcoming the president, highlighted that several hundred Cape Verdean professionals have been trained at the island’s universities during these four decades of relations.

He also noted the links between the University of the Oriente and the Isidoro da Graca Institute of Advanced Studies and the contributions made to the education of masters and doctoral students in various areas.

Attending the lecture were officials of the ministries of Higher Education and Foreign Affairs, a representation of the diplomatic corps and Cape Verdean students studying in Cuba.

The distinguished visitor arrived in the country on Monday, December 14, on an official visit, during which he will hold official talks with Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers, among other activities.

His visit comes within the framework of the 40th anniversary of relations between the two countries, after the archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean gained independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975.
