The protests in the al-Rif region city of Hoceima stem from the underdevelopment of the area and the arrest of al-Harak movement leader Naser Zef-Zafi. Morocco is a monarchy headed by King Mohammed VI which maintains close political and military links with the United States.
In addition to the repression in the north, the state of Morocco has refused to implement a United Nations mandate to hold internationally-supervised elections in the occupied territory of the Western Sahara where the Sahrawi people have been denied the right to self-determination since the withdrawal of the colonial power of Spain over 40 years ago.
