ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Iraqi security forces announced the liberation of the city of Mosul from the Islamic State (IS).
On Saturday the Iraqi security forces controlled the last IS-held areas in Mosul’s Old City, announcing the liberation of Mosul after fierce fighting with the extremist group that lasted eight months, an Iraqi commander said.
Lieutenant Colonel Thaer al-Kinani, a commander in the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (CTS), speaking to an Iraqi local TV from the Old City of Mosul, congratulated the people of Iraq for “the fall of IS caliphate in Mosul.”
Al-Kinani added that there were heavy clashes between the CTS fighters and IS extremists in the Old City, stating that the Iraqi forces have now reached the Tigris River.
“IS extremists, locals or foreigners, had two options in the face of the Iraqi forces, death or death, they were all surrounded and killed, and those who tried to flee have failed,” the Iraqi commander told al-Sumaria.
Mosul liberation operation launched on October 17, 2016 with the participation of thousands of fighters including Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces, Iraqi forces and Hashd al-Shaabi, and backed by the US-led anti-IS Global Coalition.
