Tunisian State Criminalizes Domestic Violence

Tunisia’s parliament approved a bill against gender based violence on Thursday.
In line with the UN guidelines, the law defines violence against women as “any physical, moral, sexual or economic aggression” against women, France 24 reports. The bill also envisions police officers training, specialized prosecution unit, as well as tailor made juridical services for recognized victims.
The bill has been hailed by international human rights watch as a pioneering step for women’s rights in the region and the Arab world. However, Human Rights Watch calls for international aid to assist with the effective implementation of the new bill. 47% of Tunisian women experienced some form of domestic violence according to a 2010 survey by the National Family Office.
