ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Local leaders joined the Pay Equity Coalition on Thursday to call for equal pay for African American women.
The group cited a 2018 State Department of Labor report from Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul and the state's labor commissioner. The report says black or African American women make the equivalent of 64 cents on the dollar compared to white, non-Hispanic men.
"One-hundred years later, the fight for equitable laws, policies, and practices for women continues," said Tanya Thurman of the Rochester Pay Equity Commission. "And like all the previous movements in this country, people of all walks of life banding together for a common goal is what is still needed to address pay equity issues from multiple fronts."
The group is encouraging the community to join them at the Labor Day parade and for upcoming Native American and Latina Equal Pay Day.
