Syrian Rebels Wield Heavy Weapons in Attack on Airport

By DAMIEN CAVE
New York Times

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Syrian rebels shelled an airport near Aleppo on Thursday in what was described as one of the first known instances of insurgents using captured heavy weapons, as opposition activists warned that fighting for the city, the country’s main commercial center, would likely intensify.

A Syrian activist said President Bashar al-Assad’s army appeared to be preparing for an all-out assault.

“We have seen military reinforcements making their way to Aleppo,” said Abou Firas, an activist in Aleppo who used a satellite Internet connection because telephone and Internet service from the city was cut off. “We were worried about massacres but now we are issuing a warning about a war of extermination to be launched by the regime.”

The news about the government reinforcements could not be independently confirmed because of restrictions on reporters. It came after the battle for Aleppo intensified on Wednesday when United Nations observers there reported that Syrian jets had fired rockets into contested neighborhoods and that rebels had commandeered tanks and other heavy weapons.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, said the rebels had put the captured armor to use, shelling a military airport near Aleppo.

A video forwarded by Mr. Firas, purportedly from a highway between Aleppo and the coast, showed a convoy of nearly a dozen tanks, gas tankers, and several pickup trucks carrying armed soldiers.

It was not clear when the video was shot, but before earlier ground assaults, the Syrian government has cut off communication in what appears to be an effort to keep rebels — who have become extremely savvy with YouTube videos and Skype — from broadcasting the army’s attacks.

By Thursday afternoon in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Internet was coming back online gradually. Clashes continued, especially in the southwest of Aleppo, where rebels and Syrian troops have been engaged in a bitter battle.

Some reports from Turkey also suggested that Syrian government forces were trying to cut rebel supply lines, with fighting raging in a rebel-held town near the Turkish border.

On Wednesday, hours after President Assad urged his forces to step up the fight, opposition leaders said they had found dozens of bodies in a suburb of Damascus in the aftermath of the Syrian Army’s house-to-house search for rebel fighters and activists. This claim of a new massacre came as the rebels faced severe criticism themselves for what appeared to be their brutal summary execution, one day earlier, of suspected pro-government gunmen on the streets of Aleppo, recorded and uploaded on the Internet.

Videos purported to have been taken in the Damascus suburb, Jdeidet Artouz, showed bodies lined up under bloodstained sheets, as a narrator gave an estimated count that continued rising: 37, 42, and then even more.

“I counted 52 bodies,” said Abu Abdullah, a resident who said he had helped move the dead to a local mosque before burial. “I’m really shocked. Why here?”

The bodies were found near an area where rebels said fighting had flared in the past week. But analysts said the bodies appearing outside Damascus in a town also filled with refugees — along with reports of renewed fighting in the capital and an escalation of combat in Aleppo, Syria’s largest metropolis and commercial center — all suggested that the 17-month-old conflict was becoming increasingly intense and bitter, with more front lines and more bloodshed.

“It’s a rapid escalation,” said Andrew J. Tabler, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “Once you start using fixed-wing aircraft and you have a city under full revolt, it’s clear that the Assad regime is not going to stop and is not breaking. We’re entering a new phase of this conflict.”

Aleppo, which for much of the anti-Assad uprising had been relatively stable, now is the site of the most vicious fighting. For nearly two weeks, the Syrian Army has been battling rebel fighters for control of the city, and for the first time, the United Nations said on Wednesday what rebels had been saying for days: the Syrian Army was using jet fighters in its operations. And they are not just flying, as in the past; now, according to the United Nations monitor mission in Syria and videos showing flashes of light bursting from dark jets, they are firing.

“Our observers confirmed fighter aircrafts firing rockets and cannons — heavy machine-gun fire,” said Sausan Ghosheh, a spokeswoman for the United Nations monitor mission.

Mr. Tabler noted that the Syrian warplanes were not yet dropping bombs. But the calculated escalation in the use of jets seemed to be part of an effort by Mr. Assad to rally his supporters by making it clear that he would not limit his military effort. In rare published remarks seemingly designed to marshal government forces and dissuade anyone thinking of defecting, he called on Syria’s military to show “more readiness and continued preparations” to confront “internal agents” seeking to destabilize his battered country, according to the official SANA news agency.

This week, it has become increasingly clear to outside military analysts that the fighting in Aleppo is likely to drag on. Helicopters thwacked overhead Wednesday as clashes broke out around several more police stations, which have become a focal point for rebels seeking to hold neighborhoods or gain ground.

Taxi drivers charged four or five times the usual fare, while residents said water, food and electricity seemed ever scarcer.

With the rebels now possessing tanks — United Nations observers did not have information on how many, or where they might be deployed — the conflict seems to be moving further away from the six-point plan for peace outlined by Kofi Annan, the special Syria envoy for the United Nations and the Arab League, whose plan seems increasingly irrelevant. On Thursday, a frustrated Mr. Annan submitted his resignation from the post, effective at the end of August.

Opposition figures drew special attention to the bodies in Jdeidet Artouz — sending an alert to reporters with a link to live-streaming video of a mass funeral procession and mass burial — just one day after rebels in Aleppo caused an outcry among rights groups and others over their videotaped public executions of men identified as pro-government militiamen.

Those executions attracted hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, and were cited by Russia, the Syrian government’s most important foreign backer, as evidence of brutality by Mr. Assad’s armed adversaries, whom he calls terrorists.

“Bloody reprisal of the opposition forces over the government supporters in Aleppo proves that human rights are violated by both sides,” said Gennady Gatilov, the deputy Russian foreign minister, in a Twitter message.

Annan to Step Down As UN Envoy to Syria

Annan to step down as international Syria mediator

By Louis Charbonneau and Tom Miles | Reuters – 1 hr 3 mins ago.. .

UNITED NATIONS/GENEVA (Reuters) - Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is stepping down as the U.N.-Arab League mediator in the 17-month-old Syria conflict at the end of the month, the United Nations said on Thursday, the latest sign that the outlook for a diplomatic solution is bleak.

"Mr. Annan has informed me, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Nabil Elaraby, of his intention not to renew his mandate when it expires on 31 August 2012," Ban said in a statement, adding that he and Elaraby were in discussions on appointing a successor to Annan.

"Kofi Annan deserves our profound admiration for the selfless way in which he has put his formidable skills and prestige to this most difficult and potentially thankless of assignments," Ban said.

Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin was quick to react, suggesting to reporters outside the Security Council in New York that Moscow was disappointed that Annan was bowing out.

"We understand that it's his decision," Churkin told reporters. "We regret that he chose to do so. We have supported very strongly Kofi Annan's efforts. He has another month to go, and I hope this month is going to be used as effectively as possible under these very difficult circumstances."

Churkin added he was encouraged that Ban was looking for a successor to Annan.

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Annan cited "finger-pointing and name-calling" in the 15-nation Security Council as one of the reasons for his decision to step down.

"The world is full of crazy people like me. So don't be surprised if Secretary General Ban Ki-moon can find someone who can do a better job than me," Annan said when asked about a possible successor.

"There may be other plans, other approaches that may work quite effectively," he said, adding that at this stage the focus should still be on a political transition which means "President (Bashar) al-Assad will have to leave sooner or later."

Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky declined to comment on who might replace Annan, though he said a decision might come sooner rather than later.

Annan suggested that continued arming of all sides in the conflict and the Security Council deadlock had undermined his ability to pursue a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

"The increasing militarization on the ground and the clear lack of unity in the Security Council, have fundamentally changed the circumstances for the effective exercise of my role," Annan said.

FRUSTRATION

Council diplomats have said privately that the United States and Gulf Arab states have become increasingly frustrated in recent weeks with what they saw as Annan's dogged commitment to diplomacy at a time when they believe all avenues for dialogue with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have been exhausted.

Churkin quickly started finger-pointing about Annan's departure, suggesting that Western powers that opposed "reasonable and balanced proposals" in the Security Council undermined Annan's peace efforts from the start.

Western diplomats, however, blame Russia and China for vetoing three council resolutions intended to ratchet up the pressure on Assad to stop his attacks on civilians and halt the fighting, which has escalated into a full-scale civil war.

Call for Withdrawal of Minustah Forces From Haiti

HAITI
Press communiqué

Brazil's Minister of Defense, Celso Amorim, Receives the Delegation

From the Committee For the Withdrawal of Troops from Haiti

During the meeting on July 10 at the Ministerial Defense Cabinet in Brasilia, Markus Sokol presented to the Minister the campaign for the withdrawal of troops decided last November at the Continental Rally, where representatives from seven countries were present at the Municipal Hall in Sao Paulo; it was from that hall that the Appeal for a Continental Day of Action this past June 1st was launched to demand the withdrawal of troops. And this was at the origin of the request for a meeting with the Defense Minister.

Sokol questioned the presence of the Minustah forces, which after 8 years have neither brought stability nor relieved the misery of the people, creating a situation of successive frauds in the Presidential elections, without the international aid that was announced ever arriving, and he asked:

"What are we doing in Haiti ? A former Minister (Jobim) has said that we were training to fight in the "favelas" of Rio. This is not acceptable! Demonstrations in Haiti continue demanding the restoration of national sovereignty and the withdrawal of troops. The situation has got even worse, with the recent invasion of the Human Science Faculty (FASCH) by Brazilian troops, in spite of the protests of the University Rector himself. The government cannot support this, this is the behavior associated with governments such as that of Alckmin and Serra (of the PSDB, pro-Imperialist parties in the Sao Paulo government that invaded the local University)".

Ferro, a Member of Parliament, underlined this point: "Eight years ago I understood that the presence of troops would be for a limited period, but today, I do not find in the facts, any justification for maintaining them."

Adriano, a Member of Parliament, recalled the withdrawal from the Army of Morr do Aemao (RJ), noting that, " troops cannot solve social conflict. We are against the idea of the intervention of the army spread by the School of the Americas (of the USA). We want to banish that from our history." He ended by asking the Minister "what is the calendar for withdrawal?"

Alexandre Conceiçao declared: "The position of the MST is for withdrawal of the troops. For many years now, we have had a Brigade in that country, in a cooperation project with peasant movements, exchanging experience while we receive here in Brazil, Haitian delegations for training courses. That is what the model of cooperation of Brazil with Haiti should be."

Fignolé Saint Cyr had come to Brazil at the invitation of the CUT. Brazil's main trade union federation (which supports the withdrawal of troops and whose leaders were that day in Congress in Sao Paulo), explained that he had come "to ask for Brazilian solidarity to rebuild Haiti, to rebuild it not only physically but also to rebuild its sovereignty, which is incompatible with the presence of troops decided by Western powers." He considered that " after eight years, the so-called stabilisation forces are really occupation forces, that have brought the cholera epidemic to our country and are violating our sovereignty. Brazil could help in giving the example by withdrawing its troops. I went to the UN last year, but they put forward no prospect, they gave no date. But what the Haitian people want, and what organisations in the union and popular movements demand is the the withdrawal of troops."

Minister Celso Amorim justified the sending of troops ("to avoid chaos") and denied that they were an instrument "of the colonialism of big powers" -- but he said "that today our intention is to leave, but that must be decided with other Ministers and other countries, in particular from South America and the UN because we can do nothing unilaterally. The presence of troops was asked for by the government of Haiti and the UN Security Council, which is the only body that legitimizes this type of intervention. I think it has already lasted longer than one would have wished, which could have created this or that conflict but any incident has been investigated. We have to plan a progressive withdrawal and I repeat, decided on through dialogue with our partners in the Unasul, whose countries have troops there."

The Minister recognised that "the demand for compensation for the cholera merits to be examined by the UN" and he said "he was not informed of the University Faculty affair."

"We can have different points of view, which is why I insist on dialogue", he concluded, "as a citizen, I have always said what I think, we should withdraw the troops. But as Minister, I say withdraw, Yes, investigate the incidents, Yes, but not a sudden disorderly withdrawal, the progressive withdrawal is reasonable; for my part, I would leave a battalion and the rest of the engineers and technicians, but the UN does not see things in this way."

The Minister received from Barbara Corrales records with the account of the International Commission of Inquiry on Haiti (ICI-H) on the abuses and crimes committed by the Minustah troops, including records of the recent invasion of the FASCH by Brazilian troops.

Finally questioned on the calendar for withdrawal, the Minister accepted a new interview three months from now, "including before the discussion on the renewal of the UN troops' mandate the 15th of October."

Hezbollah Says Armed Resistance Vital to Lebanon Security

Armed Resistance vital to Lebanon security: Nasrallah

Wed Aug 1, 2012 11:13PM GMT
presstv.ir

Lebanon’s Hezbollah has rejected calls for disarmament, saying the presence of the armed resistance movement is needed to protect the country against Israeli military threats.

Speaking on the 67th anniversary of the Lebanese Army’s foundation late on Wednesday, Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah denounced attempts made by the US and Israel to disarm the Resistance.

The campaign to disarm Hezbollah started after the Israeli army was forced to leave Lebanon’s occupied south in 2000, Nasrallah stated.

He recalled the victory of Hezbollah against Israel in the July 2006 war, and noted that the Resistance has long protected the Lebanese people.

Nasrallah criticized the Western-backed March 14 alliance for pressuring Hezbollah to hand over its arms to the Lebanese Army.

“If we handed over the weapons of the Resistance to the army, where would it deploy them?” he questioned.

He explained that army is an organized institution and thus unable to hide missiles and other weaponry in case of an Israeli attack. "Therefore, those who ask for the handover of Hezbollah’s weapons to the army want the Resistance and the army to be destroyed.”

Nasrallah also called for close cooperation between the Lebanese Army and the resistance movement, but not at a level that army gives orders to the Resistance.

The Lebanese leader said Hezbollah was the first party to provide its views on the national defense strategy, stressing that the country needs a strong army along with a strong resistance.

Nasrallah said Lebanon's national dialogue is an US-Israeli plan to disarm the resistance movement, censuring the parties involved for failing to discuss the national security strategy proposed by Hezbollah.

“We had high hopes we could achieve our goals through national dialogue,” he said, regretting that the negotiations “never aimed to protect Lebanon.”

The resistance leader, however, assured that the movement is not planning to boycott future talks among the Lebanese factions.

Nasrallah also called for a discussion of a liberation strategy to retake Kfar Shouba and the Shebaa farms, which remain under the Israeli occupation.

“We call for putting the strategy of liberation on the national dialog table… We need both strategies of defense and liberation,” he stated.

Prominent Judge to be Egypt's New Justice Minister

Prominent judge to be Egypt's new justice minister

Wed, Aug 1 2012
By Yasmine Saleh and Ali Abdelaty

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian appeals court judge Ahmed Mekky said he has accepted the post of justice minister in Egypt's first cabinet in the government of newly elected President Mohamed Mursi, and is to be sworn in with other cabinet officers on Thursday.

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil, who had himself been a little known technocrat in the irrigation ministry until tapped by Mursi, formed the cabinet with career bureaucrats and at least three Islamist politicians, including the education minister.

The first permanent government since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak last year gives the once-banned Brotherhood, a powerful influence in Egypt, and Kandil's decisions have faced opposition from non-Islamists who wanted a more inclusive government.

Although the judiciary, like most government offices during the Mubarak-era, was considered corrupt, many judges, including Mekky, gained public respect for supporting verdicts that were not in the interests of Mubarak's ruling elite.

"I have accepted the post of minister of justice in the new cabinet," Mekky, a deputy head of Egypt's appeal court, told Reuters. "My main mission that I seek to achieve via this job is to promote social justice and independence of the judiciary system," he added.

Mekky had been among a group of judges who were vocal about cases of vote rigging, which had helped to keep Mubarak and his political supporters in power for 30 years.

Last month, Mekky showed his strong support for the new government by giving the legal justification for the recall of the Islamist-dominated parliament on several television talk shows.

Egypt's top constitutional court had ruled that the body was void days before the final round of the presidential vote.[ID:nL6E8I82NX] The then-ruling military council issued a decree to dissolve the elected legislative body.

NEW MINISTERS

Incumbents who kept their jobs in the new ministry included Finance Minister Mumtaz al-Saeed and Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr Kamel, both of them career government employees.

Also announced was the new interior minister, Ahmed Gamal el-Din, a career policeman, similar to those who held the job under Mubarak.

Mostafa Mussad, a member of Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, was appointed education minister. Brotherhood member Tarek Wafik was appointed to run the housing ministry and another, Osama Yassin, was appointed youth minister.

The choice of defense minister was one of the few portfolios not announced on Wednesday. The post is held by Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the military council and cabinet and military source said he is likely to remain.

The ministries of investment and oil, major economic portfolios, were given to top-level government employees.

Osama Saleh, the head of the state-owned General Authority for Investment, said he would be investment minister, and Osama Kamal, the head of the Egyptian Petrochemical Holding Co., said he had been appointed oil minister.

Facing a wave of criticism from non-Islamists, Kandil appeared to row back on a decision to appoint a hardline Salafi scholar as minister of religious endowments. Mohamed Ibrahim, the scholar, said this week he had been offered the job.

Egyptian newspapers have said Kandil himself has close links to the Brotherhood, although he has denied it.

New Egyptian Cabinet Has Few Holdovers

New Egyptian Cabinet Has Few Holdovers, Islamists

By Associated Press
August 1, 2012

(CAIRO) — Egypt‘s incoming Cabinet will have few Islamists and some holdovers from the outgoing military-backed team in key positions, according to a partial list released by state media Wednesday, a day before the first government under the country’s new Islamist president is sworn in.

The choices by President Mohammed Morsi’s prime minister, Hesham Kandil, are seen as a test of the intentions of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt’s official news media listed more than 20 ministers in the new Cabinet, so far including only two members from the Brotherhood — an apparent attempt to calm concerns over the group’s intention to dominate the government.

The Brotherhood appointees will hold the higher education and the housing ministries.

Highlighting the difficulties of forming a government with broad appeal, Kandil took more than a week to nominate his ministers. The government must also work through a power struggle between the newly elected president and the military council, which ruled Egypt during 17 months of transition.

The military council, headed by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, took over power following longtime President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster.

Just before Morsi was declared winner, the military council issued a constitutional amendment which undercut much of the president’s authority, gave the military the right to approve the budget and retain legislative powers. The first elected parliament had been dissolved through a court order days before.

Key ministers of information, justice and culture are yet to be named, highlighting the tough negotiations over the posts. The defense minister is expected to be named by the military.

Kandil and Morsi’s first government face daunting challenges, the first of which is presenting a coalition government that moves to heal deep divisions in the country following the election in June of the Islamist Morsi as Egypt’s first civilian president.

Morsi had promised an inclusive government, but an alliance of pro-democracy advocates criticized him for choosing a prime minister with few known accomplishments, while alienating political groups with liberal leanings.

From the beginning, some liberal parties said they would boycott a government formed under a Brotherhood president.

The new lineup is likely to face criticism from the youth and protest groups that led the uprising against Mubarak, because it includes none of their representatives, and in many cases it promotes mid-level ministry officials from the old regime to the top jobs.

(MORE: The Death of Omar Suleiman: Man of Shadows Slips into the Dark)

According to the partial list, the ministers of finance and foreign affairs from the outgoing transitional military-backed government keep their posts, an apparent attempt to reassure Egypt’s international allies and investors.

The main domestic problems confronting the government are the economy and domestic security.

An economic crisis was caused in part by steep drops in investments and tourism during 18 months of turmoil that started with last year’s uprising that overthrew Mubarak.

Egypt’s foreign currency reserves have dropped to dangerous levels, and attempts to secure foreign loans have not borne fruit because of political infighting.

The new Interior Minister’s main task will be restoring a sense of security to his people, who have suffered from a crime wave and lawlessness.

The minister, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Gamal-Eddin, was the head of public security under the outgoing minister and previously served as a police chief in southern Egypt.

The new government faces also rising public frustration. Hospitals have come under attack by angry Egyptians, and demonstrators have blocked roads in frustration over frequent power outages and a lack of running water. Labor strikes are widespread.

Symbolic of the problems, a boiler in a major power plant in Assiut in southern Egypt exploded Wednesday, shutting down the unit. Also, a plant in another province to the north broke down, plunging the seven governorates that make up the heart of Egypt’s south into darkness, an electricity company official said.

This constitutes a 40 percent loss of power generating capacity in central and southern Egypt, the official said on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to speak to reporters.

Angry residents went on a rampage, firing guns in the air in one province, and in another, setting tree trunks on fire and putting them on railroad tracks to block traffic.

Morsi is due to visit the area Thursday after swearing in his new Cabinet.

The Cabinet will have two women ministers, including the only Coptic Christian.

The new government will have no representative from the powerful, radical Salafi party, Al-Nour, which backed Morsi in his bid for the presidency. Party spokesman Nader Bakkar said Kandil ignored requests by his party for the communication, local development and business sector ministries, offering instead the environment portfolio.

“We rejected this,” he told The Associated Press. “We were not consulted in the formation of the government, and we won’t participate in the government so as not to bear the responsibility.”

As Egypt’s two leading Islamist movements, the Salafis and the Brotherhood sometimes cooperate but often disagree over policy and religious matters. The Salafis won 25 percent of the seats in the now dissolved parliament, while the Brotherhood garnered nearly 50 percent.

Sudan Says Bashir Agreed in Principle to Meeting With Kiir on Political Crisis

Wednesday 1 August 2012

Sudan says Bashir agreed “in principle” to meeting Kiir as UNSC “expects” deadline to be met

July 31, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan clarified on Tuesday that its president, Omer Al-Bashir, is not opposed in principle to meeting his South Sudanese counterpart, Salva Kiir, amid growing pressures on the two sides to meet a UN deadline for the conclusion of post-secession talks.

The clarification follows statements in which the Sudanese ministry of foreign affairs’ spokesman, Al-Obaid Adam Marawih, said on Monday that Al-Bashir declined to accept an invitation from the African Union (AU) chief mediator Thabo Mbeki to meet Kiir in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Tuesday.

Marawih said that Al-Bashir, who flew to Qatar on the same day, apologized due to planned travel arrangements.

The Sudanese delegation to the talks being held with South Sudan said in a press release that Khartoum had agreed “in principle” to the proposed meeting and that Marawih’s statements were “taken out of context.”

“President Al-Bashir agreed in principle to the meeting, but at a later date, due to private circumstances and Al-Bashir’s commitment to travel to Qatar on the same day proposed by the mediator” the statement said. “We wish that this delay would allow more time to achieve progress in the talks so the summit’s results would be fruitful”

Meanwhile, The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has reminded both sides of their commitment to reach an agreement before the 2 August deadline, which the UNSC set in May and warned the two countries of facing non-military sanctions if they failed to meet it.

Mark Lyall Grant, UK envoy to the UNSC, noted on Tuesday that the meeting between Al-Bashir and Kiir has not yet taken place and urged both leaders to show the “necessary statesmanship to make the necessary compromises so an agreement can be reached”

“The UNSC has set a deadline and expects results by that deadline” he stressed.

The UNSC demands that the two sides concludes their talks on oil issues, demarcation of borders, the status of Abyei and citizenship by the 2 August deadline.

But the talks themselves, which focused mainly on border security and oil transit fees, have so far failed to reach agreement on any of these issues amid reports that the two sides are planning to request a joint extension of the deadline.

Seif al-Islam Says Trial in Occupied Libya Would Be Murder

Seif Gadhafi Says Trial in Libya Would Be Murder

AMSTERDAM August 1, 2012 (AP)

The son of killed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi says that he wants to be tried for alleged war crimes in the Netherlands, and a trial in Libya would be tantamount to murder.

In a filing by defense lawyers at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands late Tuesday, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi said "There will certainly be no justice in the case if the prosection is based on evidence from torture."

"I am not afraid to die but if you execute me after such a trial you should just call it murder."

The Hague court and Libyan government are negotiating where Seif's trial will take place for war crimes including murder and torture allegedly comitted during the overthrow of his father's regime. He is being held in western Libya.

Blast Hits Occupied Libyan Military Intelligence Office in Benghazi

Blast hits Libyan military intel office in Benghazi

12:18pm EDT

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A strong explosion rocked the Libyan military intelligence offices in the eastern city of Benghazi on Wednesday but caused no casualties, security sources and eyewitnesses said.

The blast occurred early on Wednesday when attackers threw an explosive device at the building from a passing car, security sources in Benghazi said. The explosion was so strong that it shattered windows in nearby buildings on Dubai boulevard.

Adil Othmane, an army spokesman in Tripoli, confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation. He attributed the attack to the absence of security guards.

It was the third time the building had been attacked this year. For many Libyans in Benghazi, where the revolt that toppled long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi began, the building symbolizes the oppression they endured at the hands of his government.

Benghazi has seen a spate of attacks, as well as protests by local groups who complain that eastern Libya is being neglected by the authorities in the capital Tripoli and who want more powers for the region.

Seven Iranian relief workers, official guests of the Libyan Red Crescent Association, were abducted on Tuesday in the heart of the city by an unknown armed group.

The "N" Word From the Champs Elysee to Avenue of the Americas

The “N” Word from the Champs Elysée to Avenue of the Americas

Cynthia McKinney | Thursday, June 14, 2012, 14:22 Beijing

The latest Hollywood brouhaha over Gwyneth Paltrow’s decision to tweet the caption “ni**as in Paris for real” to accompany a picture of her with friends Jay-Z and Beyoncé while in Paris doesn’t compare to the new evidence of “fraud upon the Court” that has emerged in a largely unnoticed civil rights case that very well should be reopened after being unfairly dismissed six years ago.

How about Hollywood executives regularly referring to their own clients, and Blacks in general, as “niggers,” “niggas,” “coons,” “spooks,” and “monkeys” while they intentionally discriminated against Black concert promoters, putting them out of business?

It is the contention of Leonard Rowe, perhaps the best-known and most successful of all Black concert promoters, that the regular use of these words by powerful Hollywood executives is a telling indicator of Hollywood’s pervasively racist attitudes toward Blacks, an attitude that produced illegal trust-like business practices that essentially made Black concert promoters extinct.

How could these particular Hollywood executives do that?

According to music industry veterans, once a Black entertainer “crossed over” to a White audience, Black concert promoters were almost never allowed to promote that entertainer again.

Moreover, according to Rowe, not once was a Black concert promoter allowed to promote a White entertainer. According to Rowe, this collusion to fix profits effectively denied the Black community the spin-off economy associated with concerts and concert promotions, and the multiplier effect of dollars turning over in the Black community.

Someone presented evidence to me that was just presented to District Judge Robert P. Patterson and Chief Judge Loretta A. Preska of the Southern District of New York: a summary of the racially-charged words that were regularly used by these particular Hollywood executives: “nigger,” “spade,” “colored,” “monkey,” “nigga,” “uncle tom,” “spook,” and “coon.”

It makes for depressing reading: page after page after page after page, the evidence provided to me shows the last name of the particular executive and the number of times that person used one of the above words in e-mail traffic.

It is 18 pages, with two pages mysteriously missing, of heartbreak where specifically the word “nigger” is used hundreds of times. Even more to the point of “fraud upon the Court,” decisions were made in Rowe’s previous case without even a mention of the e-mail evidence.

In fact, Rowe was never given the e-mails that produced the 18-page summary sheet although he paid for them. Rowe’s case was dismissed by the Court at Summary Judgment.

To think that this is the way these Hollywood executives view their African-American clients is not only appalling, but represents more than a virtual throwback to the ignominious days of a Southern Plantation.

According to Marcus Washington who worked at William Morris, that company client list has included Bill Cosby, Whoopi Goldberg, Lauryn Hill, Rihanna, Outkast, Trya Banks, Serena Williams, LeBron James, Whitney Houston, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Spike Lee, Janet Jackson, Tyler Perry, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Usher, Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, and Denzel Washington to name a few.

The evidence of how particular Hollywood executives referred to their own clients is available for anyone interested in seeing it. Just click here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/93697362/Rowe-Entertainment-Inc-v-William-Morris-Agency-et-al-98-8272-Breakdown-of-Racial-Epithets-Including-Nigger-Used-By-Execs-Email-Search-Re

And who exactly are these particular Hollywood executives? Rowe’s lawsuit is against The William Morris Agency (now known as William Morris Endeavor) and Creative Artists Agency, the biggest and the baddest of the bunch. (And adding political muscle to this tawdry script, William Morris Endeavor is currently headed by Ari Emanuel, brother to the former Chief of Staff of President Obama and now Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel.)

For many aspiring Black entertainers, signing with these agencies represents a dream come true. Too bad that this new evidence brought forward in the Leonard Rowe case shows how these agencies truly feel about African Americans when they think no one is watching.

Sadly, Leonard Rowe is not the only witness to Hollywood’s institutional racism. Marcus Washington, with whom I have spoken, has his own sordid tale of life while employed at Hollywood’s titan–The William Morris Agency.

In published reports on the internet, Marcus, acting as his own lawyer, filed a $25 million lawsuit alleging racial discrimination in December 2010. Among the many details in his 80-page complaint, Washington said that upon his entry into William Morris’ New York office in September of 2008, there were zero Black, zero Latino, and only one Asian-American Agent employed out of an executive staff of 50.

Washington wrote that he was the only Black hired into the Agent Trainee program and while he had recently graduated from the University of Miami with his Masters in Music Business and Entertainment Industries and helped co-manage the career of J Records singer/songwriter and now eight-time GRAMMY® nominated artist Jazmine Sullivan, all of his White counterparts advanced above him having considerably fewer academic achievements and less professional work experience.

According to Washington, William Morris immediately sought to have Washington’s case compelled into arbitration because of an arbitration agreement Washington signed as a condition of employment. Washington argued that the provision which stated that “any issue” including ones of “discrimination” and “retaliation” were to be arbitrated was “unconscionable, tainted with illegality and malum in se” given the historical evidence presented to the Court showing the company’s 113-year history of systemic disparate treatment towards Blacks.

In July 2011, Washington’s judge ruled in favor of William Morris. In September 2011, Washington appealed to the Second Circuit that his lawsuit against William Morris was erroneously compelled into arbitration, and over the last nine months, Washington has attempted three times to have this decision reversed so that his case can be impartially decided in a public forum by a jury that reflects the diversity of New York City.

Each time, the Court has denied his appeal without providing a judicial opinion. Sadly, this industry has been successful at keeping this type of racial discrimination away from the eyes of a jury.

But now, after acquiring the new evidence discovered in the Rowe case, Washington filed a motion in the Court to introduce evidence that various attorneys at Loeb & Loeb LLP–the law firm representing William Morris in both the Rowe and Washington cases–as well as judges, have been involved in a corrupt conspiracy to collude and commit “fraud upon the Court.”

Because of what Rowe felt were unreliable lawyers colluding and conspiring with his opponents’ lawyers, Rowe has joined Washington as a pro se litigant in the Southern District of New York. They both have refiled their cases and they are awaiting decisions from the Court.

This time around, the Southern District Court of New York has the opportunity to do the right thing. Both Rowe and Washington are involved in litigation that could produce landmark Civil Rights decisions. Both of them are willing to share the evidence unearthed in the Rowe case that could deal a devastating blow to “business as usual” in the entertainment industry.

Syrian “Regime Change”: Washington’s Latest “War Crime” in the Name of the “Freedom, Democracy, Human rights”

The 4th Media News | Monday, July 30, 2012, 11:07 Beijing

One wonders what Syrians are thinking as “rebels” vowing to “free Syria” take the country down the same road to destruction as “rebels” in Libya.

Libya, under Gaddafi a well run country whose oil revenues were shared with the Libyan people instead of monopolized by a princely class as in Saudi Arabia, now has no government and is in disarray with contending factions vying for power.

Just as no one knew who the Libyan “rebels” were, with elements of al Qaeda reportedly among them, no one knows who the Syrian “rebels” are, or indeed if they are even rebels (Antiwar.com).

Some “rebels” appear to be bandit groups who seize the opportunity to loot and to rape and set themselves up as the governments of villages and towns.

Others appear to be al Qaeda. (Antiwar.com)

The fact that the “rebels” are armed is an indication of interference from outside.

There have been reports that Washington has ordered its Saudi and Bahrain puppet governments to supply the “rebels” with military weaponry.

Some suspect that the explosion that killed the Syrian Defense Minister and the head of the government’s crisis operations was not the work of a suicide bomber but the work of a US drone or missile reminiscent of Washington’s failed attempts to murder Saddam Hussein.

Regardless, Washington regarded the terror attack as a success, declaring that it showed the rebels were gaining “real momentum” and called on the Syrian government to respond to the attack by resigning. (reuters.com)

The following is from a leaked intelligence document describing a previous Western terrorist intervention in Syria just in case any reader is so naive as to think that “our government would never do that.”

“In order to facilitate the action of liberative (sic) forces, …a special effort should be made to eliminate certain key individuals. …[to] be accomplished early in the course of the uprising and intervention, …

Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main (sic) incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. …Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus …

Further: a “necessary degree of fear .. frontier incidents and (staged) border clashes”, would “provide a pretext for intervention… the CIA and SIS [MI6] should use … capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension.” (Joint US-UK leaked Intelligence Document, London and Washington, 1957) (globalreasearch.ca)

Obama has not said why his government is so desperate to overthrow the Syrian government.

The current president was an eye doctor in London who was brought back to Syria to replace his father, who had passed away, as president of the country.

Washington is reticent about its real motives, which it masks with high-sounding humanitarian rhetoric, but Washington’s motives are transparent.

One motive is to get rid of the Russian naval base in Syria, thus depriving Russia of its only Mediterranean base.

A second motive is to eliminate Syria as a source of arms and support to Hizbullah in order that Israel can succeed in its attempts to occupy southern Lebanon and acquire its water resources.

Hizbullah’s fighters have twice defeated the Israeli military’s attempts to invade and to occupy southern Lebanon.

A third motive is to destroy the unity of Syria with sectarian conflict, as Washington destroyed Libya and Iraq, and leave Syria to waring factions to dismember the country, thus removing another obstacle to Washington’s hegemony.

Syria, a secular Arab state, like Iraq was, is ruled by a political party composed of Alawis, more or less Shia Muslims.

The Alawis comprise about 12% of the Syrian population and are regarded as heretics by the Sunni Muslims who comprise about 74% of the Syrian population.

Thus the orchestrated “uprising” appeals to many Sunnis who see the opportunity to take over. (In Iraq it was a Sunni minority that ruled a Shia majority, and in Syria it is the opposite.)

The divisions among Arabs make Arabs vulnerable to Western interference and rule.

The Sunni-Shia split makes it impossible for an Arab country to unite against an invader or for one Arab country to come to the aid of another.

In 1990 the Shia Syrian government lined up with the US against the Sunni Iraq government in the First Iraq War.

Neither Lawrence of Arabia, Nasser, nor Gaddafi succeeded in creating an Arab consciousness.

Washington’s cover for its violent overthrow of other governments is always moralistic verbiage.

First the target is demonized, and then Washington’s naked aggression is described as “bringing freedom and democracy,” “overthrowing a brutal dictator,” “protecting women’s rights.”

Any assortment of cant words and phrases seems to work.

Hillary Clinton has been especially strident in advocating the overthrow of the Syrian government.

The silly woman even issued threats to Russia and China for daring to block Washington’s attempt to use a UN resolution as cover for invading Syria.

Washington misrepresents the Syrian government’s resistance to being overthrown as a government conducting terror against its own people.

But Washington had no condemnation for the terror attack, whether its own or that of a suicide bomber, that killed high-level Syrian government officials.

Washington’s double standard prompted the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, to accuse Washington of having “a sinister position.”

Indeed, Washington does.

But what is surprising about Washington’s sinister position after Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Pakistan?

Undoubtedly, after Syria is overthrown, Washington will move on to Iran.

Russia itself is already being surrounded by US missile bases, and the Russian government has a disloyal and traitorous political opposition financed by American money.

China is confronting a rapid buildup of US air, naval, and troop bases in the Pacific.

How long before China’s government has a disloyal opposition financed by Washington?

The hegemon is on the march, but what Syrian Sunnis see is a chance to overthrow the Alawite Shia.

The Syrian Sunnis will ally with Washington despite the fact that Washington overthrew the Iraqi Sunnis.

Few Arabs, it seems, mind being puppets of a foreign regime that hands out billions of dollars.

Washington loosely refers to Syrian President Assad as a “dictator” or “brutal dictator,” but obviously if Assad is a dictator he is not very effective in that role.

Normally, dictators don’t permit an opposition to rise, much less arm itself.

It would be more accurate to say that the ruling party is authoritarian, but the ruling party has introduced elements of democracy with the new constitution.

As Iraq has proved, Arab governments have to be authoritarian if their Sunni and Shia populations are not to be constantly engaged in civil war.

Both Bush and Obama claim that Washington brought “freedom and democracy” to Iraq.

However, the ongoing violence in Iraq is as intense or more intense than under the American occupation.

Here are the reports for the last three days:

July 23: “A wave of bomb attacks and shootings in Baghdad and north of the capital has killed at least 107 people. At least 216 were wounded.”

July 24: “A second day of intensified attacks left at least 145 Iraqis killed and 379 more wounded.”

July 25: “Attacks continue across Iraq: 17 killed, 60 wounded.”

This is what Washington did for Iraq.

Far from bringing “freedom and democracy,” Washington brought endless mayhem and death.

And this is precisely what Washington is in the process of bringing to Syria.

The Transpiring Truth About the Battle in Aleppo and NATO´s War on Syria

The Transpiring Truth About the Battle in Aleppo and NATO´s War on Syria.

NATO´s Economical, Military and Moral Bankruptcy.

Christof Lehmann – nsnbc. – The so-called “Battle for Aleppo” is letting the truth about NATO´s war on Syria transpire with all possible clarity. Russian Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov used the irony of understatement when he pointed out that “some media outlets are providing advance coverage of the events”. On his web-site, Gatilov stated that “tendentious media outlets are trying by all means to make up for what the opposition has failed to achieve”.

The so-called “Battle for Aleppo” is showing with all possible clarity that the NATO/GCC/Israeli Discount Army of Low Lives, Al Qaeda, Muslim Brothers, and hands for hire is no match for the Syrian Military and for the people of Syria. They can create terror, and they do. They can spread murder and may-ham, and they do. They can rob, plunder, rape and pillage, and they do. They can be supported by NATO/GCC Special Forces, and they are. Their unadulterated barbarism can create the most appalling outrages and the greatest grief and suffering and human tragedy, and it does. They can cause this suffering in the name of human rights, and they do so with the help of complicit media.

What they can not, is to defeat the Syrian Military and the people of Syria with a Financially and Morally Bankrupt Modo-Colonial Powers Discount Army of Robbers and Rapists. What they can not, is to destroy national unity along the lines of ethnicity and religion – but they try.

The Turkish opposition to the Erdogan Regime is becoming increasingly confident. Ever more evidence for Turkey´s massive and criminal involvement in the manufacturing of the war on Syria transpires.

Recently, the Deputy Chairman of Turkeys Labor Party, Hasan Basri Ozbey, declared that the Party has clear evidence that Turkish President Gul and Erdogan were involved in manufacturing the war on Syria.(1) Yesterday the Turkish newspaper Yurt wrote that it is in possession of documented proof, that Turkish Intelligence is involved in carrying out terrorist attacks inside Syria. (2)

Having witnesses inside Syria who can confirm Syrian media reports from Aleppo, the reality of the so-called “Battle for Aleppo” transpires and underpins that NATO´s Discount Swarm of Disposable Assets is no match for the Syrian Military or the people.

By yesterday the majority of the mercenaries that had swarmed to Aleppo had been uprooted and were being pursued by military forces. In Handarat, a northern district of Aleppo, the military confronted a group of 400 – 500 insurgents with approximately 30 pick-up trucks, destroying all vehicles and inflicting heavy losses among the insurgents. After receiving information from residents and verifying it, the military confronted armed insurgents in the al-Nairab neighborhood in Aleppo.

A clear signal for that the insurgency is not faring too well is that it had to register significant losses among it´s officers. According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA, Ahmad Haj Qasem bin Abdul-Rahman, who was one of the armed groups leaders in the northern regions of Syria has been killed. Other high-ranking insurgents who reportedly have been killed include Yaser Mehi Eddin Abbas and Rajab Mohammad Hamimi.

In the Aleppo countryside districts of Daret Azzeh and Qibtan al-Jabal a group of armed insurgents traveling in 9 cars were confronted by the military and killed, after residents reported that they were committing acts of murder and sabotage.

In the Salah Eddin neighborhood in Aleppo the military confronted armed insurgents, inflicted heavy losses on them and seized their weapons.

According to one source in Aleppo, the military pursued an armed group which intimidated civilians in the al-Jameeliya area, killing 11 of the insurgents, and six others in Saadallah al-Jaberi Square. The source added that Syrian authorities also had pursued an armed terrorist group which horrified the citizens by shooting randomly around in the Mohafazaa area.

An official source of the Syrian government informed SANA that an armed terrorist group had managed to take control of a warehouse in Aleppo where military uniforms and food supplies are stored. The terrorists then proceeded by placing explosives in the warehouse. One of the explosive charges reportedly exploded prematurely, causing the others to explode, killing and injuring scores of the terrorists.

In the area of Ourum al-Kubra, a rural district outside Aleppo, the military reportedly captured a truck that was loaded with large amounts of explosive devices. The truck was reportedly bound for Aleppo. Three men were arrested.

A group of insurgents that attempted to cross the border from Lebanon into Syria at Halat, outside of the city of Talkalakh was repelled by the Syrian military. A SANA reported quoted a source, saying that the insurgents fired machine-guns and missiles from inside Lebanese territory at the al-Dabousiyeh border crossing in an attempt to infiltrate into the Halat side of the border. The insurgents reportedly suffered heavy casualties.

In the Daraa region, Syrian authorities tracked an armed terrorist group in the towns of jeb al-Safa and Qara. The terrorists hideout was stormed and the terrorists were arrested.

A Syrian military unit confronted an armed group of insurgents near Hamaa, which had opened fire on law-enforcement officers at the al-Sqelbiya roundabout which leads to the al-Madik citadel. The clash led to the destruction of the car and the arrest of the insurgents.

This is, in brief, what Western main Stream Media, the US-State Department, and the political leadership throughout NATO and GCC member states as well as Israel describe as “The Battle for Aleppo”. The mere fact that this chaotic acts of terrorism, murder and may-ham are at all described as “a battle” makes it evident that NATO and the NATO led alliance is morally as well as militarily bankrupt.

The question is, whether NATO´s political and military leadership will realize their bankruptcy and begin taking part in a process of actual conflict resolution, or if they will choose to continue the escalation. In the latter case it might be that it becomes necessary for China, Russia and members of the Shanghai Cooperation Council to remind the want to be modo-colonialist masters about their actual standing.

Time for a reality check ? The economic crisis in Europe and the USA is bad enough as it is. China and Japan have begun accepting each others currency and others are following suit. The true “International Community” is tired of accepting an absolutely worthless US-Dollar and Euro at face value to finance NATO military adventures which are ultimately directed against themselves.

What did the EU delegation to China learn when it came begging to China for bailout money in late 2011 ? ” We don´t lend out stupid money”! How much more clearly and politely do you expect a Chinese diplomat to be when he is trying to find a nice way of saying that China has had it with you ? A little bit cultural sensitivity rather than a want to be colonial master-race arrogance and ethnocentrism helps understand the true bearing of that message.

For those who have problems getting off of their high horse, here is a translation:

“No, Mr. and Ms. NATO ! Even if you are waging Discount wars with hordes of terrorists to compensate for your economical bankruptcy – you are still morally bankrupt! Unless you cease your degeneration into barbarism you will have to learn the hard way how it is when your worthless funny money just does not buy the gas needed to fuel your terrorists pick up trucks. Go begging somewhere else to finance your disgrace!”

World War III of Contending Systems and Ideologies

Posted on July 27, 2012

“World War III of Contending Systems and Ideologies—Socialism versus Capitalism—For Global Hearts and Minds”

Socialism versus Capitalism: Who Will Win? Revolutionary Consciousness as a Material and Motive Force

An old aphorism says: “A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged; and a liberal is a conservative who has been downsized or outsourced.” Indeed it is amazing how when one’s material circumstances or interests change, changes in consciousness may soon follow.

But the relationships between material being and interests and subjective consciousness are not one way or as one way as many vulgar materialists would have it. Indeed all of human history gives ample evidence of individuals and groups driven by transcendent causes and beliefs accomplishing heroic, often near impossible, things with very meager material resources to work with.

At an “International Symposium on the Reform of Property Rights and Enterprise Development in Transitional Countries”, held at Tsinghua University in Beijing, September 1-2, 2004, at which I was one of the invited speakers, an interesting and very revealing exchange took place during the question and answer period following one session of presentations.

Some of the neoclassical-economics-based speakers, with the usual hubris of end-of-history triumphalism, asserted as “proved”, or “self-evident”, or “axiomatic”, backed by nothing more the mere strength or apparent certitude of their assertions, the predicate that capitalism beats socialism in all the possible ways that matter (e.g. assuring “personal liberty” of the individual, “efficiency”, “satisfying” “consumer preferences”, etc) I posed some questions.

I posed the following question: If anyone here were sick, perhaps gravely ill, which kind of physician would you prefer to have? Would you prefer to have a capitalist-minded/driven doctor or one like Bai Qiu En (Dr. Norman Bethune)? The implication of the question–and compound metaphor–was clear:

Would you prefer to have a capitalist-minded/driven doctor; one who:

· sees the patient, and his/her disease, as a mere commodity and instrument of profit and capital accumulation, market share and power?;

· sees the patient in very narrow terms, doing only what it takes to avoid malpractice litigation, and just enough to get the patient (customer) to “feel” satisfied enough to return when another problem (perhaps even related and not caught in the original examination as is common and whose focus is sales–>customers–>sales)?;

· does what it takes to minimize costs (avoid or socialize) relative to expected revenues or maximize revenues relative to expected costs; doing only what it takes to get the “customer” (not whole and precious human being) in and out in order to maximize the potential number of patients (customers or profit instruments) in and out–and revenues and profits–per day?

· went into medicine, and chose the locations and specializations solely on the basis of the likely profit, status and power potentials with no regard to where the greatest mass needs were?;

· Subject only to the “Golden Rules of Capitalism”: a) “Those who have the Gold make the rules; b) “Do unto thine competitors as thine competitors find imperative to do unto thou, but do it first and do it worst.”?

Or, would you prefer a doctor like Bai Qiu En or Dr. Norman Bethune? A physician who, not only highly skilled as a physician in narrow technical terms, but:

· one with the type of revolutionary consciousness and values that leads him or her to view the patient as a total and precious human being and not simply as a patient or customer–certainly never as a mere commodity;

· One who does not view the particular pathology as a mere commodity;

· one who views each and every “patient” as a whole and precious human being to be treated as one would want one’s own loved ones–or oneself–to be treated;

· One who sees the mind and body not as a duality but as conceptual or analytical parts of an integrated and inseparable unity;

· one who sees “efficiency” not in terms of the narrow (capitalist) minimizing input (time and narrow costs) relative to “output” (relieving symptoms or “cure” in the narrow sense) but who sees and defines “efficiency” in broad, holistic and long-run terms, with probable true social not only private costs, and probable true social not only private benefits considered before acting;

· One who does what he or she does not from motives of greed, selfishness, status needs or capitalist profit/competitive imperatives, but out of a sense of dedication to the transcendent cause and a genuine desire to “serve the people heart and soul.”

Which type of doctor (or system) would you prefer to have and live under?

One of the speakers, an esteemed and rising professor from another university, not Tsinghua, obviously very “bright” and “educated” in narrow and formalistic terms, answered. With, what appeared to me to be a rather self-congratulatory and kind of “gotcha” smile, he answered:

“Well, if I was sick, and it would take me thirty years to find a doctor like Bai Qiu En, I would prefer a capitalist doctor.”

Because of time and other constraints (there was never any censorship in any form at that conference except that which inevitably occurred as a result of time constraints, the number of people who were scheduled to speak and the need to be sensitive to others who also wanted to speak) I could not answer but my blood boiled.

He was doing what the many of neoclassical/neo-liberal/ ideologues typically do. They love controlling the microphone and debate (they typically only hire and promote their own kind and allow only their own ideologically-driven curricula in academia, politics, media and in other spheres).

They love summarily asserting (as axiomatic, self-evident and “proved” beyond any doubt for anyone who knows anything) the core predicates of their arguments. Their argument, which is basically a set of assumptions of/for contrived syllogisms, is that in the competition (race) between capitalism and socialism, in terms all of the ways that matter for human beings, for example in the scope of provision of physicians and in the quality/efficiency of those physicians, capitalism wins over socialism every time.

This is but one of the many tautologies and predicates–asserted and even engineered–as axiomatic and “proved” of that which still remains to be “proved” even in narrow neoclassical and capitalist terms.

Of course, tautologically, capitalism becomes accepted as the most “efficient” and “progressive” system, especially when the very definitions of “efficiency” and “progress” are as contrived as the syllogisms they serve, and, when they are then summarily asserted and accepted as the only possible “operational” and rhetorical definitions.

Yet, as Marx, and so many others like Chairman Mao so aptly demonstrated, that capitalism, when viewed “holistically” and dialectically, with the highly probable true costs and “benefits” (social as well as private, long-run as well as short-run) realistically assessed and understood, becomes not only increasingly inefficient, but even increasingly anti-efficient and regressive.

This is apparent even using the six main capitalist Neoclassical concepts of “efficiency” (technological, economic, productive, consumer, exchange and allocative) and “utilitarian” notions of “progress” (the greatest economic welfare for the greatest number).

Let’s take some concrete examples that even the Neoclassicals admit in a limited sense. Even the conventional textbooks in economics concede, finally, that, for example, the notion of technological efficiency (maximum output, minimum input) or economic efficiency (maximum Total Revenues and lowest possible Total Costs) coupled with greed and the imperatives of competition between capitals, leads to inefficiencies in terms of “exchange efficiency” (P=MSC=MSB or prices reflecting all true costs and benefits–social as well as private).

A common example is when profit-maximizing firms pollute the environment, or free-riding increases, in unregulated markets, less and less are true costs (marginal private costs plus marginal costs of negative externalities) assessed and paid by those who receive the true benefits.

Similarly, less and less are true benefits (marginal private benefits plus marginal benefits of positive externalities) received by those who pay the true costs. Typically, when negative externalities are not recognized and/or assessed and/or paid, inefficiencies (in capitalist Neoclassical terms) of overproduction and under pricing result, And when positive externalities are not recognized and/or assessed and/or paid, the inefficiencies of underproduction and under pricing result.

This is but one example out of many of the imperatives and “logic” of capitalism resulting in self-negation of “efficiency” (anti-efficiency) and “progress” (instability/regression) even in narrow and contrived capitalist Neoclassical terms. Instead of being a system that once produced maybe six positives for each negative, as capitalism ripens, becoming imperialism, spreading globally, it increasingly produces maybe six negatives for every one positive.

The meta-contradiction governing all modes of production, between continual development of productive forces for human survival on the one hand, versus increasingly regressive and sabotaging relations of production (e.g. class/strata/interests) on the other hand, steadily intensifies and hollows out the very foundations of the system itself.

And not only does capitalism become less and less “efficient”, even in capitalist Neoclassical terms, as it ripens, but capitalist constructs and methods of assessment of “efficiency” themselves, in their contrived limits and ideological purposes, produce other inefficiencies not even considered or measured until they come home to roost and threaten the survival of the planet and humankind itself–like Global Warming and Nuclear War.

So in other words, the different capitalist forms and constructs of “efficiency” are potentially—and actually—contradictory and self-negating: e.g. technological and economic efficiencies cause, via the normal imperatives and “logic” of capitalism, inefficiencies and anti-efficiencies in terms of other forms of “efficiency–say exchange efficiency.

Many probable true costs (private plus social) go unmentioned, and/or not properly assessed and/or “socialized” to be paid by those who receive none of the purported benefits. Many probable true benefits (private plus social) go unmentioned and/or not properly assessed and/or not paid for by “free riders” who get benefits without paying true costs.

In a system like Capitalism, that not only celebrates but even requires, for its expanded reproduction, greed, selfishness, ultra-individualism, narcissism, clinical psychopathy, sociopathy, competition, short-run thinking, ultra-reductionism etc: “Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die”.

Everyone appears to want, and Capitalism certainly promises through seductive social capital, the gain without the pain, the benefits without the costs, the immortality without mortality. So true costs (private plus social) typically get hidden, un-assessed, not mentioned, or socialized, while true benefits (private plus social) often get privatized, understated and concentrated.

Take Capitalist-based commoditized law. In the profit-based legal system of Capitalism, it is about winning and losing and having the money for commoditized “effective representation”. The discovery of truth or administration of justice do not enter the equations and calculations of efficiency and profitability.

Typically, competition and profit imperatives, along with the rewards for “winning”, cause lawyers to hide and understate the inculpatories (negatives) and hyping and magnifying the exculpatories (positives) in their own cases, while trying to do the reverse to the opposition lawyers: magnifying their negatives while minimizing their positives.

The inevitable and increasing result or typical “efficiencies” of capitalist-based and commoditized law is that increasingly many rich and clearly guilty can buy acquittals, while many poor and clearly innocent wind up in prison and on Death Row.

Let’s take one more example to drive home the point. Another form of “efficiency” in neoclassical theory is called “Consumer Efficiency”. It means that the consumer has “efficiently” allocated his/her income among competing commodities such that he/she cannot reallocate that income and improve, in net terms, his/her total utility gained from the spending of that income.

It is assumed that the consumer is driven to maximize or at least “satisfice” total utility; and to do that, the consumer seeks to maximize Marginal Utility gained from consuming a particular commodity X relative to what was paid (Price of X) to obtain that marginal utility (Maximizing Mux/Px or “Utility Bang for the Buck”) that adds in net terms, to total utility. When the Mux/Px = Muy/Py = Muz/Pz for example, the consumer can no longer consume less of x, y or z and more of another, and improve his/her total utility gained.

But the imperatives of capitalism (commoditization, effective competition, realization of maximum possible real, after-tax, risk-adjusted surplus value, accumulation of capital, maximization of productivity, expanded market share/power etc) lead to increasingly commoditized and asymmetrically-available information and fraud against consumers that compromise “consumer efficiency” (MUx/Px= MUy/Py = MUz/Pz…)

Consumers, among the masses who are not “connected”, increasingly have less and less access to the requisite information necessary to assess true comparative marginal utilities relative to comparative prices paid to realize those utilities, so that incomes cannot be reallocated and improve net total utilities gained.

As for the concept “allocative efficiency”(no “person” can be made better off without making some “person” worse off), that is the pure metaphysics of Pareto masquerading as “science”.

Back to the conference. One reason my blood boiled when I heard this flippant and rhetorical answer from this esteemed professor, is that I come from a people, Blackfoot, who like Indigenous Peoples everywhere, and indeed poor people everywhere in the U.S. and elsewhere, are surrounded by technically skilled–and no so skilled—physicians that exist, in the sense of physically existing at a certain time and space, but, for the poor, do not really exist in any meaningful way.

Since these doctors are driven by capitalist imperatives and associated requisite mentalities, these doctors only exist for those with sufficient incomes to pay for their services and/or who do not live on isolated Reserves/Reservations or rural areas, with no transportation, and are unable to travel to see these doctors. If I am ill, and the most highly-skilled physician in the world is practicing down the street, what good is it to me that capitalism, capitalist “values” and capitalist imperatives, produced a physician who will not see me and treat me because I am poor?

Better that physician does not exist as his or her existence, in the physical sense, will only piss me off and perhaps even exacerbate my illness due to the mind-body unity. In the U.S., an estimated 44 million people have no health insurance, another 37 million have only marginal health insurance, and since the “right to life” itself (like the right to justice etc) is itself a commodity, for sale only to those that can afford it under capitalism, what does capitalism REALLY deliver and for whom?.

What good is the supposed rapid development of material forces or production that capitalism allegedly produces greater than socialism, when those forces produce commodities (and derivative spread effects) only for a relative few? [1]

Dr. Bethune, a product of the capitalist systems of Canada and England in terms of his medical training, and by his own admission, in terms of his early ideas of reformism, developed his technical skills not, primarily BECAUSE of capitalist-based education and medical practice, but IN SPITE of them.

Even in his own case, when he was ill with Tuberculosis, the conventional medical practice, highly risk-aversive to “guarantee success” in narrow capitalist terms, refused him the emerging and experimental technique of pneumothorax (collapsing the lung to rest the infected lung) such that he had to self-administer the technique–on himself while awake.

Dr. Bethune’s own inventions, of techniques and instruments still being used in thoracic surgery today, all came from his own humanitarianism and revolutionary consciousness without any regard as to the potential “profitability” or income/status-enhancing results of his inventions.

It was the imperatives and “logic” of capitalist-based medicine in the days of Dr. Bethune, as is the case today in many areas, that caused the choking-off and even regression of the development of the material forces and techniques of production in medicine.

Dr Bethune’s innovations–in instruments and techniques–that actually reduced costs, risks to patients and increased “efficiency”, even in capitalist terms, were consistently resisted by the capitalist-minded/driven medical establishment of his time; the same applies today.

Another reason my blood boiled when I heard the answer to my question from this esteemed professor is that capitalism only develops certain productive forces more rapidly than socialism.

The basic questions for all modes of production and social formations are: What, How, For Whom, Where, When, Why (to produce and distribute). The “What” question is critical because it leads to and shapes the answers to the other questions. But in capitalist terms, efficiency means producing more and more of output X with less and less inputs, but never gets into the actual nature of output X and implications (private and social) of that output.

So if grotesque pornography is the output, and it is “legal”, then “efficiency” means producing more and more pornography using less and less inputs, focusing ONLY on present likely revenues versus costs, ignoring any other possible or probable private and social costs associated with pornography. A capitalist enterprise producing pornography at lower total costs than a socialist enterprise producing mass-affordable medicines is said to be more “efficient” in Neoclassical terms.

Because capitalism is about profits for power and power for profits (like the slogan of the Medici family: “Money to Acquire Power; Power to Protect Money”), and is about “effective” demand (purchasing power or “dollar votes” to back up tastes and preferences many of which are also created and conditioned for profit, and not natural from basic subsistence needs), capitalism does a great job in developing forces of production in areas like: superficial and soul-destroying forms of “entertainment”; dope; pornography; rigging elections; allowing rich criminals to escape justice; narcissistic sports events; mansions and toys for the rich; placing clones in government; “quality education” for the few who can afford it; “quality” medicine for the few that can afford it; weapons of death and destruction; instruments of mind and soul control and manipulation (advertising); specialty foods; “high-fashion” clothing for the few; unevenly developed infrastructure; etc.

But in such areas as affordable housing for the many, basic health care available to all, universal access to education, basic medicines available to all, balanced development of infrastructure, minimizing social costs of private endeavors and maximizing social benefits of private endeavors, etc socialism beats capitalism anytime.

That is, when real socialism is allowed to develop without aggression and subversion–outside and inside–from imperialist machinations and the old weeds of capitalism threatening the full, free and fair development of socialism and free competition of ideas and systems–capitalism versus socialism.

The communist, on the other hand, looks not only at levels and productive functions of costs or inputs, or utility functions of consumers consuming, including the nature and implications of WHAT is being produced or consumed, but, also, looks at the real costs (private plus social, on the individual as well as on society, political, social, cultural, ideological, spiritual, long-run as well as short run) of WHAT it is that is being produced, and HOW it is really being produced and FOR WHOM it is really being produced.

Extending the metaphor from medicine, if, as is quite common, and sadly is increasingly common, a person goes through an operation that is botched, requiring a second or third operation to fix what went wrong in the first operation (like leaving surgical instruments in the patient, unqualified staff, operation rushed to get more patients through a given operating room per day–capitalist “efficiency”), then the real costs of a given procedure (for purposes of assessing level of “efficiency”) should include the costs of the second and third procedures necessitated by the first botched one.

In the U.S., with touted as having the most “advanced” and “efficient” medicine in the world, 200,000 patients die each year from hospital-based infections. Under capitalism, each procedure would be assessed independently in terms of assessing the “costs” relative to the “benefits”; and in any comparisons of capitalist versus socialist efficiency.

But, if, in accordance with the old adage, “a stitch in time saves nine”, we are able to conceptualize and assess all true costs and true benefits (short-run versus long-run, private plus social), the case can be made that socialism, with communist revolutionary values and practices, will beat capitalism, even in terms of “efficiency”, and even in terms of capitalist constructs and calculations of “efficiency.”

Certainly Bai Qiu En, under the most unfavorable conditions possible, driven by communist spirit and consciousness, was able to do medically, what capitalist minded-driven physicians under the most favorable conditions would have never been able to do.

And the imperialists understand this well. This one of the main reasons for imperialist encirclement and social systems engineering campaigns: to engineer the predicate or conditions and constraints in present or emerging socialist social formations that will never allow free competition and debate between systems and ideologies; conditions and constraints that will make socialism look like the supposed “barbarism” and “inefficiency” portrayed by bourgeois ideology.

This leads to another reason my blood boiled when I heard this answer from this esteemed professor: Why does someone have to teach this “educated” and “bright” Chinese professor basic Chinese–and world–history as well as about some present-day realities and irrefutable facts?

In the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels, in reference to China, and of course other places as well, noted that colonialism (and imperialism) is a force that ‘batters down all Chinese walls’, and is one that ‘compels all nations, on pain of extinction, to adopt the bourgeois mode of production; it compels them to introduce what it calls civilization into their midst, i.e. to become bourgeois themselves. In one word, it creates a world after its own image.[2]

When has there ever been free, fair and open competition between socialist versus capitalist systems or ideas? From the very beginning of the People’s Republic of China (actually long before), as was the case of Cuba, the early USSR, DPRK, Albania, Vietnam, etc and so many other examples of socialism, socialist societies, often inheriting horrible conditions and legacies of imperialism and colonialism, have been subject to: imperialist embargos; outright threats of nuclear annihilation; social systems engineering and destabilization campaigns; covert operations; exacerbations of historical ethnic and religious rivalries; denials of critical technologies and resources; military aggression; cultural subversion; arrogant missionaries; forced importations of drugs and soul-destroying foreign “culture”; denial of access to international organizations and the global community of nations,; coup d’états and overthrows of sovereign and freely-elected governments; assassination campaigns.

All of this was designed to destabilize, overthrow and never to allow developing— and thus showing in concrete practice, over capitalism—the superiority of socialism and communist values and ideas.

If international recognition by the imperialist powers and the international organizations they control is some kind of test of the reality, existence and legitimacy of any nation or nation state, then the People’s Republic of China (portions of which still remain manipulated by foreign powers–e.g. Taiwan) did not “exist” for almost thirty years after its existence in reality (and under international law).

The same apples to Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and other nation states summarily and arrogantly not “recognized” by some imperialist powers. This has caused large-scale diversions of precious resources from socialist growth and development into necessary defense against imperialist machinations. Indeed this was the object of imperial social systems engineering and aggression all along: engineering, to make “axiomatic” and self-evident, the basic tautologies, predicates and syllogisms of imperialism:

IF, A=B; and

IF, B=C;

THEN/THEREFORE,

A=C.

IF, Country A (say China or Cuba for example) = System B (Socialism or Communism);

IF, System B (Socialism or Communism) = C (Inefficiency, Repression…)

THEN,

A=C…..

The answer according to neoliberals and other kinds of imperialists and their stooges? For China or Cuba or other socialist systems to become “Developing”, “Efficient”, “non-Repressive”, “non-Terrorist” etc, the only answer is to become like the U.S. or some other imperialist power asserted to be the opposites in the above-mentioned syllogism of imperialist repression and legitimation.

And the imperialists have no limits. Just imagine, for but one example: Even before World War II was over, the Class-A War Criminals of the infamous Japanese fascist Unit 731 were all shielded from prosecution by the U.S. and its allies (in return for using the fruits of their barbaric “research”) and one of them even became a Prime Minister of Japan; and the same was done with shielding German Nazi war criminals before the end of World War II, while the nominal allies of the U.S., who had saved many U.S. lives (Communists in China and Soviets in Europe) were being attacked by the U.S. and its allies using wanted war criminals from the formal enemies of the U.S. and its allies.

There are simply no limits to the treachery and crimes the imperialists are prepared to undertake and cover-up in what they call “World War III of Contending Systems and Ideologies—Socialism versus Capitalism—For Global Hearts and Minds”.

These are but some of the reasons my blood boiled when I heard that answer from the esteemed professor, not from Tsinghua University, to my question when I attended the symposium at Tsinghua University.

When I return, this debate, no doubt, will continue, in another venue and forum. And this response will be passed on to that professor with an invitation to debate in a forum and venue when we both have ample access and time for the microphone.
