UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the recent deadly bomb attack in the Syrian capital of Damascus that claimed the lives of dozens of people.
On Friday, 26 people were killed and dozens of others were injured when an unknown attacker detonated explosives at a crossroad in the densely populated neighborhood of al-Midan in Damascus.
"I condemn the terrorist bombing in which many people were killed and injured today in the Syrian capital of Damascus,” Ban told journalists at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
“I extend my sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and people of Syria. I remain gravely concerned about the deteriorating situation in Syria,” he added.
The UN chief reiterated that “all violence is unacceptable and must stop immediately."
Syrian officials say most of those killed were civilians; some security forces were also among the casualties.
Authorities believe that the death toll could increase since some of the injured are in critical condition.
The Syrian Interior Ministry has blamed al-Qaeda for the bomb attack.
This is the second such incident in Damascus in the past two weeks. On December 23, at least 44 people were killed in two bombing attacks outside Syrian intelligence buildings.
