The United States will be the scene of more demonstrations and civil disobedience over the acquittal of George Zimmerman, an African-American activist said.

“These demonstrations will continue. There will be more civil disobedience,” Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of Pan-African News Wire in Detroit, told Press TV on Monday.

American protesters came to the streets across the country over the weekend to express their anger at the acquittal of Zimmerman, who killed unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin.

“There will be more unrest until the US government and the ruling class in this country take seriously the question of racial profiling, of violence against people of color and of course the overall economic exploitation of the nationally oppressed and working people in general inside the United States,” Azikiwe said.

He noted that the protests are “absolutely necessary” and minorities must stand up against this “blatant racist violence.”

The demonstrations took place in Los Angeles, New York, Oakland, Chicago, Detroit and several other cities.

Angry people also burnt flags, smashed windows and police cars. Protesters held a banner declaring: "We Are All Trayvon Martin."

The Department of Justice says it is considering whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case.

Azikiwe concluded that African-Americans in the US cannot rely on the criminal justice system for their human rights despite Washington’s “champion of human rights” claim.
