ANCYL regrets coup in Egypt

The ANC Youth League has noted with immense regret the military coup d`état in Egypt in which a democratically elected leader, President Mohammed Morsi was unconstitutionally removed from office.
As a progressive, democratic and pan-African youth organisation that embraces constitutionalism, the ANC Youth League condemns in the strongest possible terms the military coup d`état in Egypt, our sister country.
The actions of the military are most likely going to escalate tensions between the pro- and anti-Morsi protesters. The consequence of this could be bloodshed. The situation is more volatile now than before the military coup. The implications for North Africa and the Middle East are dire, with the latter being a region that has been unstable for decades now.
We also know historically that the Egyptian security establishment is sustained by the United States, and this continues up to date. We do not rule out the interference by the United States in this sovereign state, Egypt. We condemn the imperial interests of the US in Egypt, North Africa, the Suez Canal and the Middle East which informs their rogue behaviour when dealing with these regions.
The ANC Youth League does not recognise leaders or governments who come into power through undemocratic means. In this instance, we consider the removal of Morsi unconstitutional and the current regime unelected and illegitimate.
We demand that the African Union (AU) moves swiftly to suspend Egypt as a member of the AU. We also call upon the United Nations and the Arab League to do the same.
The leadership of the continent, through the AU, must do all it can to find a speedy and sustainable peaceful solution, using all political diplomatic means available.
We urge the ordinary people of Egypt to find one another and resolve their political differences peacefully through dialogue. We as the international community are always ready to support them through this important transition.
