At least 30 people died in Egypt on Friday, July 5 as supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi demonstrated at the Republican Guard headquarters in Cairo. Morsi is being held at the building and faces questioning and prosecution in the aftermath of the military coup on July 3.
The Southern African state of Zimbabwe has been given the go ahead by the constitutional court to proceed with national elections on July 31. ZANU-PF held its political campaign launching rally on July 5 in Highfield.
The National Union of Mine Workers in South Africa has begun strike action against De Beers corporation. The strike is being called due to the failure of the mining firm to honor wage demands from the country's largest union.
Finally, former National Security Agency (NSA) contract employee Edward Snowden has been offered political asylum by three Latin American states. Snowden is under indictment by the United States government for espionage and theft.
