Arab League foreign ministers call for international community and United Nations to take 'deterrent' action against Assad regime over its alleged use of chemical weapons
Arab League chief Nabil El-Araby says 18 Arab League states support tough measures against the government of Bashar Al-Assad for its alleged chemical attack that killed at least 1,400 civilians in Damascus last week.
"These weapons cannot be used except via certain rockets and aeroplanes, so they were conducted by the [Assad] regime," El-Araby said at a press conference on Monday.
El-Araby also spoke of a "new kind of cold war," referring to the US and Russia, which support opposing sides in the conflict.
US President Barack Obama announced on Saturday that he would seek the approval of Congress before launching a “limited and narrow” military intervention in Syria.
During the last few months, both powers have tried to bring the warring sides to a peace conference dubbed Geneva 2.
"What was agreed at Geneva 1 has not been implemented,” El-Araby said. “There must be a political solution because the government will not be able to put an end to the rebels, and vice versa."
