Former South African President and leader of the African National Congress (ANC), Nelson Mandela, has been discharged from hospital. Mandela has been hospitalized for 3 months due to a lung ailment acquired during his 27-and-one-half years imprisonment by the racist apartheid system.

The Tripartite Alliance is holding an economic summit in Johannesburg
this weekend. The summit is designed to discuss economic issues related to the current situation in South Africa.

The South African government is to deepen its involvement in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by sending more artillery. South Africa has deployed troops to the DRC in a United Nations supported peacekeeping mission.

Finally, a demonstration against U.S. military involvement in Syria took place on Saturday Aug. 31 in downtown Detroit .

More demonstrations are occurring daily in opposition to the U.S. war threats against Syria.
