The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has suspended the party’s General Secretary and the National Youth Organiser.

Nii Armah Akomfrah and Mr Ernesto Yeboah were suspended yesterday after they publicly condemned President John Mahama for accepting a car gift from a Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Kanazoe, early this month.

It is believed that the position of the two officers contradicts the one taken by the presidential candidate of the party, Mr Ivor Greenstreet.

Party worried

The Communications Director of the party, Mr Abdul Raul Kadiri, told the media that the party had been concerned about the comments made by the two leaders.

According to him, there had been calls from various quarters to suspend the two after they had brought the image of the party into disrepute.

“Their comments about President Mahama’s car gift saga were a major reason for their suspension. It was not an official position of the party,” he said in the interview.

Mr Kadiri explained further that a member of the party’s Central Committee had brought a formal petition before the committee that took the decision.

Disappointment

Reacting to the issue, Mr Yeboah expressed regret at the action by the party.

Even though he conceded that he was not able to attend the Central Committee meeting, he said the decision was premature.

He expressed disappointment at the decision, noting that the party had lost integrity.

“I wonder why a party could suspend a leader for expressing serious concerns over corruption which is affecting the entire nation,” he said.

Fight back

Asked if he would fight the suspension, Mr Yeboah stated that he did not need the position and that it was up to the party to take whatever decision it wanted to take.
