SAN SALVADOR, October 13.— The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, and the President Raúl Castro Ruz, asked for wreaths to be placed in their name in tribute to Salvadorian revolutionary Schafik Handál, PL reports.
The placing of the wreaths at Handál’s grave took place this Wednesday at an event in the capital’s Los Ilustres cemetery, as part of celebrations for the 80th birthday of the deceased FLMN leader. The Cuban delegation participating in the ceremony was headed by Ricardo Alarcón, member of the Political Bureau and president of the National Assembly of People’s Power.
Alarcón arrived in this capital last Saturday to attend the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the founding of the FMLN.
Hándal was born on October 14, 1930 in the eastern department of Usulután and, as a young man, joined the popular struggles against the military dictatorships that devastated the country for most of the past century.
From 1973 he was general secretary of the Salvadorian Communist Party and chief of its armed wing, and later joined the general command of the FMLN.
