DESPITE the deployment of troops to quell the Boko Haram sect crisis in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, suspected members of the outlawed group yesterday shot and killed a police Inspector, Kashim Bukar, in his Ummarari residence at about 9.30 p.m.
The slain police officer, according to an eyewitness, was trailed by three armed gunmen to his home where they shot him on his head and chest.
The eyewitness said: “The suspects trailed the police officer right from a football match viewing centre to his house in Ummarari, where they fired many gun shots immediately the policeman opened the door to them”.
Confirming the murder, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, said: “Yes, we lost one of our police officers yesterday in mufti at about 9.00 p.m. last night in his residence”.
He added that the suspects would be fished out based on the information provided by the community members to the police on how they trailed the police officer before he was killed in his house.
“Inspector Bukar, the officer, has been involved in the investigations of many criminal cases for many years in the state before he was killed by suspected Boko Haram sect members.
“I have directed the state Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to immediately take over the murder case and fish out his killers for prosecution”.
Yesterday’s murder brings to 13 the number of policemen and eight civilians killed in Maiduguri and Bama by suspected Boko Haram sect members.
Meanwhile, Governor Ali Modu Sheriff has stated that the procurement and donation of 40 units of Hilux patrol vehicles to the Nigeria Army by the state government was to ensure the security of lives and property in the state, especially to curb persistent attacks and killings by the Boko Haram sect members.
Sheriff made the declaration on Tuesday at the official handover of patrol vehicles to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Onyeabo Azubike Ihejirika at the Maiduguri Government House.
The governor said the sect had killed more than 20 people since it began a series of attacks in July.
