Zimbabwe Chiefs Back Amai Mugabe Elevation

TRADITIONAL chiefs across the country yesterday unanimously endorsed the nomination by the Zanu-PF Women’s League that the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe be appointed Women’s League boss at the party’s elective Congress in December.The endorsement was made at a colourful event held at Amai Mugabe Children’s Home in Mazowe ahead of the start of the Chiefs conference in Gweru today.
The gathering, which was also attended by spouses of the chiefs, followed a similar move by the Zanu-PF Youth League last month.
President of the Chiefs Council of Zimbabwe Chief Fortune Charumbira set the ball rolling, saying Amai Mugabe was doing philanthropic work which deserved recognition.
He said the First Lady brought a balance in the country’s power equation because their concerns would reach the President faster.
“We are here to support the recommendation that was made by others before,” he said.
“Our support is unanimous. Because of the good work that you are doing, you are worth rising to the level of Secretary for Women’s League. It has never happened in the history of this country that one hands over such a senior position in the party to another so amicably.
“Kuumambo ndokwazviri kwete kupolitics. Saka munoshamisa zvamaita. Munoda kuvaka nyika (You want to build the country).”
Chief Charumbira said this in reference to outgoing Women’s League Secretary, Cde Oppah Muchinguri, who voluntarily chose to relinquish her post to Amai Mugabe.
He said Amai Mugabe’s entry into politics was an ordinary phenomenon the world over.
Chief Charumbira said even in the United States of America, President Barrack Obama’s wife Mitchell, supported her husband on national duties.
“Hapana chero ukaenda kunana Obama. Mukadzi wake anonzi ani? Michelle, anomira-mirawo zvimwe achiratidza kuti ndinotsigirawo murume wangu…
“Ukaenda kwana (Prophet Emmanuel) Makandiwa unoona mudzimai wacho achinzi Prophetess… kureva kuti kana Prophet asipo mudzimai anotomira mberi achifambisa basa.
“Kureva kuti mudzimai asati ndezvababa zvepolitics, aiwa, pindawo imomo ubetsere baba. Imimi kuchurch kwamunopinda kuna Prophetess asi modzoka uku moti anokudii uku makanganwa kuti zuro kuchurch kwange kwakamira sei?”
Chief Charumbira said in South Africa President Jacob Zuma used to sit in Cabinet with his then wife Nkosazana.
“What we are saying is this is good and it is everywhere,” he said.
Chief Charumbira said the support from the chiefs was honest and wholehearted because they were not involved in factional or succession politics.
He said chiefs were fully behind President Mugabe, adding that he should finish his five year term of office.
“Iyi yenyu iyi yotongonzwa kuti munhu achifamba ave kuda kutora nyembe isu tohwa kuti kupunjira nyika,” he said
“Saka zvekurwa zvekuda zvezvigaro zvekuda uPresident, VaMugabe takavhotera gore rapera isu madzimambo. Ko wave nesimba rekuda kuvabvisa gore rino ndiyanizve?
“Wariwanepi simba iroro? Munopa munhu five years handiti. Vanadzo wani five years. Ko five years dzave kukwana paone year? Kutanga rinhi masvomhu iwayo?
“Ndinoda kuti vanhu muzive nemadzimambo kwamuri vanhu vanotaura zveuPresident vanoda kukanganisa nyika yenyu.”
In response, Amai Mugabe thanked the support she received from the chiefs.
She also paid gratitude to Cde Muchinguri who willingly relinquished her post.
“I want to thank you for your support but also I want to thank Cde Muchinguri because what she did is rare in life,” she said. “It is like donating your kidney to someone.”
Amai Mugabe said she never aspired to be a politician but she was approached by multitudes of women who converged at her Children’s Home asking her to work with them.
“Inini mupfungwa yangu yese kugara upenyu hwangu hakuna musi wandakati ndiri kuda kuita politics kana kuti chii…asi mazuva apfuura ayo vanhu vakauya vachindikumbira vachiti Amai tinoda kuti mushande nesu kuWomen’s League. Ndakavapa mibvunzo yakawanda but vakaona kuti Amai vari kutofunga kuti tiri kutamba vakazouya pano ungwandangwanda hwemadzimai… vanhu vauya vega kuti Amai tiri kuda kuti tishande tese.”
Amai Mugabe said the told the women and the youths that she was ready to work with the women, but it was up to the President to decide as the appointing authority if she was fit for the post.
She chronicled how she started the Children’s Home and how she built a school at the Children’s Home.
Amai Mugabe said the construction of the school gobbled $7 million, while another huge chunk of money went towards the construction of 30 modern houses.
She said the philanthropic work that she was doing was not for her benefit, but for the country.
“To be honest, I will never go and learn in this school, neither will I stay in these houses,” said Amai Mugabe.
“What I am doing is I am doing it for future generations and the rest of Zimbabwe.”
Amai Mugabe said plans were underway to build plans to build a hospital, a Multi Purpose Hall and the Robert Mugabe University in Mazowe.
She urged spouses of the chiefs to venture into business adding that she started her dairy business at small scale.
Amai Mugabe said as the First Family, they owed banks almost $20 million to ensure the continuity of their businesses.
She bemoaned high levels of moral decadence in society, which was resulting in baby dumping.
Amai Mugabe said so far she was looking after 78 children at her home.
“Vana vari pano kubva patakatanga takatora vana vari 15,” she said.
“Asi ndinonyatsoshamisika kuti chii chinombonyatsoitika pakati pevana vedu. Chii chinonyatsoitika nevarume vanopa vana nhumbu idzodzi nekuti vana ivava vatowandisa iye zvino ndange ndave nevana 82 takatanga kutora vana muna 2011… saka fungai kuti panguva diki diki iyoyi vana vatowanda zvakadai zvinoratidza kuti pane zvakasahata zviri kuitika musociety medu.
“Izvi zvekuti munhu anozvara mwana achinorasa chave chimwe chinhu chataive tisingambonzwi muZimbabwe ini.”
Amai Mugabe said she took pride in the fact that her Children’s Home was located in the sacred area of Mbuya Nehanda.
She took the opportunity to applaud President Mugabe’s principled leadership.
Amai Mugabe said the First Family lost several friends after the land reform programme but the President remained resolute.
She said President Mugabe was incorruptible and was committed to work for his people.
The chiefs had an opportunity to tour Amai Mugabe’s Children’s Home, her school and Gushungo Dairy.
