Outrage After Police Teargas School Children in Kenya
TVC NEWS [NAIROBI] - Widespread outrage continued to greet the violent action by Kenyan police who used tear gas to disperse demonstrators including school children who were protesting the alleged grabbing of their play ground in Nairobi.
Correspondent Ken Karuri reports that pictures of school children choking in fumes have put security officers on the spot for excessive use of force in quelling the protesters.
A day after police fired tear gas at children protesting against the seizure of their school playground by a property developer Kenyans have united to condemn the brutality meted by the security officers.
Around 100 primary school children and a small group of activists pushed over a newly built wall that separated playing fields and the school buildings, before police repulsed them violently.
The Law Society of Kenya was among the groups that condemned the incident and has already constituted a team of 11 lawyers to prosecute the police officers responsible for the assault
Renowned activist Boniface Mwangi led the protestors in repossessing the playground and said the children had a right to demand the return of the land.
Kenyan legislators also faulted the police for using excessive force to quell demonstrators and also put land grabbers on notice.
The Monday morning skirmishes left five pupils and a police officer injured and the government confirmed that it had already commenced investigations into the incident.
