University Student Killed by Government Supporters in Khartoum
April 27, 2016 (KHARTOUM) - One student was killed and three others injured Wednesday in violent clashes between government and opposition supporters at Omdurman Ahlia University (OAU), the second such incident in two weeks.
Last week, a student was killed and more than twenty others injured in bloody clashes among students at the University of Kordofan, 588 km south west of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
Violent clashes erupted on Wednesday at the OAU between students affiliated with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and those belonging to the opposition leading to the intervention of the police.
Mohamed al-Sadiq Tambash, 20 years old, a sophomore student at the Faculty of Arts was killed in the clashes.
According to the medical report seen by Sudan Tribune, Tambash, who is the son of a famous football player, was shot in the left side of the chest adjacent to the heart.
Eyewitnesses said the victim was shot during a political forum organized by the Nuba Mountain Students’ Association at OAU, pointing that the NCP affiliates attacked the attendees wounding three students.
It is worth to mention that the killing of the student last week has triggered a series of protests at several Sudanese universities.
Also, violent confrontations between University of Khartoum students and the police have been ongoing since two weeks following press reports about government intentions to transfer the university from its location and to lease out its former premises for tourism purposes.
CALLS FOR POPULAR UPRISING
Meanwhile, the opposition parties have called on the Sudanese people to take to streets to protest against the continued targeting of university students.
In a press statement extended to Sudan Tribune Wednesday, the secretary general of the opposition National Umma Party (NUP) Sara Nugud Allah said the funeral of Tambash must be turned into a spark to trigger the popular uprising to restore rights of the Sudanese people.
For its part, the opposition umbrella National Consensus Forces (NCF) called on the Sudanese people to rise up against the killers and make the funeral of the slain student a turning point in the political scene.
It urged leaders of the political parties, lawyers, medical doctors and university professors to participate in the funeral, saying that Khartoum and the various states must become a “boiling cauldron beneath the feet of the tyrant”.
Also, the opposition Sudanese Congress Party (SCoP) called on the Sudanese people to resist the regime, urging women and men to take to streets to overthrow the tyranny and open the doors for freedom and peace.
