NEW YORK.– On a day marked by the constant cold rain in the Big Apple, the President of the Councils of State and Ministers of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, visited the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations to offer condolences on behalf of the Cuban people and government for the recent death of President Tran Dai Luang.

Accompanied by the permanent representatives of Cuba and Vietnam to the UN, Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo and Dang Dinh Quy, respectively, the President wrote: ‘The Cuban people and Government will always remember with gratitude compañero Quang for his permanent contribution to the strengthening of the historic relations between our countries.”

And he added: “Our most sincere condolences to the people, Government and to the relatives of compañero Quang.”

The Vietnamese President, elected in April 2016, passed away on September 21 at the age of 61. His funeral honors will begin this Wednesday in Hanoi and, simultaneously, in Ho Chi Minh and Ninh Binh.

As soon as the Cuban people learned of his death, their leaders and organizations expressed their condolences. The First Secretary of the Communist Party, Raúl Castro, and the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel, sent messages to the Asian nation, in which they requested that the condolences be extended to the Vietnamese government and people, as well as to the President’s relatives and close friends.

Just days ago, despite being seriously ill, Tran Dai Quang held a meeting with Cuban First Vice President, Salvador Valdés Mesa, to whom he expressed the sentiments of infinite friendship of the Vietnamese people toward Cuba.

Tran Dai Quang was the last dignitary received by Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro, in November 2016, shortly before his death.
