The African Union Condemns Attempted Coup in Gabon
Addis Ababa, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) The African Union today condemned the attempt of coup d''état perpetrated by the military in Gabon.
We declare the total repudiation of the attempted coup in Gabon, said Moussa Faki Mahamat, president of the African Union Commission, through a brief communication on the social network Twitter.
According to reports from Libreville, capital of Gabon, Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang led a group that assaulted state radio and announced the establishment of a national council to save the African country from chaos.
The riot lasted a few hours, those responsible were arrested and the situation is under control, say several news agencies citing a statement by Guy-Bertrand Mapangou, spokesman for the government of President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
Since last October Bongo Ondimba is recovering from an illness in Rabat, capital of Morocco, from where he delivered a speech to the nation on December 31.
